Relict Leopard Frogs Not in Need of Federal Protection
USFWS determines populations are stable or increasing thanks to proactive conservation efforts PHOENIX — A frog species in Arizona and southern Nevada does not need federal protection under the Endangered Species Act, thanks to the multi-partner conservation efforts of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other federal and state agencies that make up the Relict Leopard Frog Conservation Team. The Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that relict leopard frog populations are stable or increasing.

California: Meeting Set for Fisheries Habitat Restoration Proposals
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Watershed Restoration Grants Branch will hold a public meeting to discuss its Draft Fisheries Habitat Restoration 2017 Proposal Solicitation Notice (FHR 2017 PSN). TheDraft FHR 2017 PSN includes focuses for the Fisheries Restoration Grant Program, the Steelhead Report and Restoration Card Program, the Forest Land Anadromous Restoration Program and the Commercial Salmon Stamp Program.

California: Ivory Ban Now in Effect
Signed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. last October, a new law banning the sale of nearly all ivory in the state of California is effective as of July 1, 2016. The ban, which can be found in California Fish and Game Code, section 2022, encompasses teeth and tusks of elephant, hippopotamus, mammoth, mastodon, walrus, warthog, whale and narwhal.

Commercial and Recreational Rock Crab Fisheries Open near Channel Islands
State waters around the Channel Islands are now open to both the recreational and commercial rock crab fisheries. Today, the director of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), after consultation with the director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Fish and Game Commission (Commission) that they recommend lifting the remaining closure within the Channel Islands exclusion area between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands.

Red Abalone Public Workshop to be Presented in Santa Cruz
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is currently working on a Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the North Coast Recreational Red Abalone Fishery. As part of CDFW’s efforts to encourage public participation in the plan development process, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and CDFW will jointly conduct a workshop on the topic. TNC is providing financial support for the event.

Multiple openers kick fishing season into high gear
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources would like to remind anglers to dust off their fishing gear and get ready for the opening of two fishing seasons Saturday, April 30. The statewide trout season and the Lower Peninsula inland walleye, northern pike and muskellunge seasons all open that day.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reminds 2015-2016 Spiny Lobster Report Card holders to return their cards by April 30, 2016 as required by law. The cards must be returned even if no lobsters were taken or no attempts were made to take lobsters.

Three Cited in Louisiana For Over-Limit Red Drum
The agent cited Donisote Santos, 53, of Chalmette, Jose Goronci, 43, of Metairie, and Jose DiSalva, 49, of Kenner, for taking over the limit of red drum and taking over the limit of red drum in excess of 27 inches. DiSalva was also cited for not possessing basic or saltwater fishing licenses.

California Halibut Fishery to Close Today (Aug. 13)
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announces the recreational Pacific halibut fishery will close Thursday, Aug. 13 at 12:01 a.m. for the remainder of 2015. The last full day of Pacific halibut fishing will be Wednesday, Aug. 12.
