Your opinions: Split shot vs. drop shot

When would you choose one method over the other? Do you find that one is generally better than the other?

This is a tought one to awnswer, becase thier are to many variables, you need to let the fish tell you what they want. the only genral and I mean genral rule is, if the fish are up try the drop shot first and if the fish are on the bottom try the split shot first other than that I let the fish tell me what They want
remember it not what you want to throw, its what the fish want to eat that works the best.

They both have their time and place. I prefer to drop shot when the fish are located and when fishing deep (lakes) Split shot is my favorite, kinda reaction fishing and you can cover alot of water.

Slip shot is a horizontal presentation, drop shot is vertical presentation.
If the bass are holding stationary on structure; start with the up/down drop shot technique. If the bass are moving, then the horizontal movement along the bottom is a better techinque.
The slip shot line being close to the bottom is camuflaged by the structure elements, the worms horizontal movement looks natural. When you drop shot the line is more visible and the worm vertical movements catch the basses attention to influence a strike.

I love both rigs and When I rig up the day before I have BOTH set up!

drop shot for the fishing small areas, exact spots and vertical.

Split shot when I need to cover water and the fish may be picky!

I would agree that the split shot is a horizontal presentation but I would argue that the drop-shot is effective in a variety of other ways as well. It's not just a drop and shake deal anymore, at least to me. I cast it, flip and pitch it. Basically anything you can do with a t-rig.

Shhhhh... don't let it get out!!! Anyone just using the dropshot for vertical presentations is missing out big time... about the most versatile rig there is!

Casting out a DS and fishing it like a texas rig hasnt been a secret for a long time. As a matter fact thats how I started fishing it because I had no idea what you were supposed to do with that thing when I first seen sombody with it tied on. I was to proud to ask how to fish it, but had no problem sticking my face in his rod locker. I nose hooked a senko on it, and just killed them at CL with it. I split shot sometimes just because Its easy. slide up your texas rig worm weight and mash the weight or just pop on a split shot on the senko rod.

Other than that a Izzy rig is my go to. Wacky worm with a nail weight in the head. Sometimes I cant get bit on a DS or spit shot but the Izzy puts fish in the boat.

Nope! Never had a outing with a ZERO on the split shot!

ASH, Sorry Don't got the weight sizes down by memory. I think the ones a quarter to third the size of your pinky nail.

Casting a stack rig was a seret back in the late 80's when drop shot was known as stacking.
Vertical or horizontal is the worm movement, not how you cast the weight.
Trask often fished the split shot vertically into suspended bass schools, the worm swims horizontal and that was the difference 20 years ago and still is.
