Yamaha Vmax 250 SHO
Does anyone have this motor? I just blew my 97 225 Yamaha TLRP and am thinking I am going to have a 250 SHO put on My 99 TR-21. I am looking for feedback on the new Yamaha 250 4 stroke SHO and I need a 20" lower end.

Just messin with you, but seriously if you were going to spend that kind of coin on a new motor, you would probably be better off selling your boat "as is" and buying a 2007 or newer boat for the same price.

My TR-21 looks almost new and I am happy with Triton and its rough water ride. What I do need is a new motor. I already bought a used boat with a used motor and took the gamble. A new motor would have a warranty and since my hull has no scratches on the running surface and looks as good as most 2007 or newer boats why would I want to do that? Actually I own a triton..mine is 2004 and looks like it's been through a Sh$t storm....you wouldn't want to see where I've taken my boat. That's awesome you have taken great care of yours. You are the exception I'm sure... I am curious about the SHO as well...looks like an awesome motor...good luck

my partner billy skinner has been running a 250 yamaha sho and its a bad a$$ motor bro. its super powerfull and great on gas. we fish a ton out of it and its been awesome. totally wish I had one on my boat. def recommend it. pm if you have any other questions about it.

I'm getting it for sure and am glad to hear the positive feedback on it. Still waiting on the 25 swamp donkeys, you ship UPS or USPS? I cant wait to get this motor on my boat but damn it's gonna be a chunk of change. Looks like I will be working 20 out of 28 days till the OT dries up right before christmas as usual.

I have been reading allot about the new SHO also. Here is something I found shocking recently when they tested 2 brand new boats with a 250 Pro XS and a 250 SHO. Same driver, same model boat, same setup. The Merc beats the SHO overall in fuel mileage, and is a bit faster it looks like. The oil cost may be countered by the fuel cost, but on a SHo you wont have to hassle with adding oil all the time. Required maintenance on the SHO is still something I am reading into.

I have only heard feedback from one person Mike at C&C - he has a love hate with the SHO - his customers love them and he hates them as he is not seeing them in the shop for warranty repair work

As far a Bassgod's stats, a 2 stroke is faster but the 4 stroke has the holeshot and is long gone before that 2 stroke gets up to speed. Both are great motors. After owning an Evinrude I would be most concerned about great service nearby. My Evinrude service in San Diego sucked.

The new Yamaha SHO is the way to go no matter what others say, (in my opinion). I am very one sided on this issue (as you can tell).
Having owned only two Yamaha outboards in 23 years without any issues. One Yamaha Pro-V 150 for 18 years (never in the Shop) And now my Yamaha VMax 225 for 5 years with no issues. After looking at the MERC numbers posted they don't blow you out of the water "who cares" (someone is penny pinching here). Very one has a love affair with the equipment they run (I certainty do). The Yamaha Brand has worked great for me for 23 yeras and is very dependable. If I had to repower; The Yamaha SHO would be my choice, without looking at any numbers. Just Because of my past experiences.

I have heard mixed reviews from alot of my friends back east. For one, the fuel econmy is even worse than posted above. The guys I know that now own the SHO say it sucks about 10% more fuel than the XS did. Their top ends are also down by about 4 MPH.
But the biggest issue they are having is overheating. Running through hydrilla beds and pad roots are a nightmare. They both have tooth brushes on pipeing to reach the lower intakes.
Out in FL we would run top end through miles of solid hydrilla, duck weed, pepper grass and kissimmee grass. Our boats would run 10 mph slower at top end due to the weed pressure and very few times would the XS overheat. The Yamaha guys were the only ones driving around or sitting flat waiting for their motors to stop beeping. The ETEC's seem to do just fine too, if they were not blowing lower units or powerheads.
True stuff guys...
I know merc has had some plug and coil problems but, look at how many there are out there. If there's 3x more of one thing, you will see three times the issues...The merc's I ran were all solid. I can't wait for my next one.

I'm with Robert on the Pro XS. Two coils in two years, both when I needed the time on the water NOT in the shop. Last go-around they did replace all of the existing coils. Lets hope they last more than 2 years

Bummer... had my Pro XS for over four years now and not a coil issue one (knock on wood)!

I destroyed a 250 SHO 20FX at the BASS OPEN whom was already on plane and 10 boat lengths ahead ( thanks to the moron in the nitro that cut in) With a 21XRD Bullet 250XS. I have about 60 hours on the motor and used less than 8 gallons of oil, in those 60 hours and that is with 2 break in periods( one was because I changed the impeller). I dont even think its 8
I do not run my boat enough to need to buy a brand new motor so I can save 150-300 bucks on oil.
If I was a guide. Sure. But you can get a used XS with a warranty for enough of a savings that you will not make up the difference in oil in 10 years.

Dont even get me started on the BS they slung out there trying to get people to buy. If I put a 25p on my Bullet there would be no holeshot. I would hit 2500 rpm and be on plane. They are a 72-74 tournament boat, thats a 20FX with a 250 SHO. The oils changes can cost about $77 if you are paying and DIY, to much more. So the savings is only for guides PAYING for it and on the water 360 days a year.
Dont even get me started on the lower unit issues. I got all of my numbers from skeeter so I am not posting them, but I was impressive for a skeeter, not for ANY other brand.
Fuel economy SUCKS, and the only 2 stroke its beating is another Yammie

Nope Holeshot is the prop and gearing. Ask skeeter if they are willing to share. A 27p to get you the top end will have a mediocre holeshot.
Also I will spot you a 5 sec head start on plane all day. I will catch and pass you 20 sec later.

....and torque Johnny boy. It is the only reason to run a 4 stroke as the 2 strokes will always kill the 4 stroke when they get wound up. BTW just leaving your neck of the woods. The Merc beats the SHO overall in fuel mileage, and is a bit faster it looks like. The oil cost may be countered by the fuel cost, but on a SHo you wont have to hassle with adding oil all the time. Required maintenance on the SHO is still something I am reading into.
