I use a 5/0 EWG when throwing my 12 and 14" worms both texas rigged and dropshoting them

Re: 10" Worm Hook
5/0 regular Offset Worm hook (Round bend or Sproat)
They are a little longer than the EWG's, and frankly, what do you need that "extra wide gap" on a relatively skinny worm.
I use these hooks for the Reaction Innovations Big Unit, and they produce great!

Re: 10" Worm Hook
I even use a 4/0 offset worm hook, Owner, and it sticks fish with regularity. I have stuck them with smaller hooks like the 3/0 Owner rigging hook as well.
Murphy, a big fish/big worm guru, used even smaller hooks for his "stitchin" big worm structure technique.
Big Power worms still work!

Re: 10" Worm Hook
I use 10" power worms a lot so here's my $.02
I use EWG style hooks as little as possible... cept for tube's or other extra thick baits where you have too..... 10" power worms are not that thick and are realy very soft once you fish em which leads to quick pentration.....regular round bend offset shank worm hooks have a better hook-up ratio (straight shank hooks are even slightly better,,, but there just a pain for me)
If yer fishing open water structure type stuff (like when I night fish or targte CL rock piles) a 5/0 round bend offset shank Gammy is my choice........... there's no need for anything larger
Now, when I fish weedy, brushy, or any thick nasty cover areas..... (read : anywhere in the Delta) .... I will only use a 3/0 offset shank round bend........ one off the best Delta Rats of all time taught me this years ago... the gap on the round bend 3/0 is plenty big enough for quick penetration and solid hook-ups..... Don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.... the advantage comes from losing less fish... yup, losing less fish...... the larger hooks will over penetrate and hook point will come out the outside of the fishes mouth... when yer in heavy cover that protruding hook point is gonna stick into every piece of grass, wood, tulle around and you will loose fish because of it...
A lot of guys misinterpret short strikes as a need for a larger hook... not true...... the larger hook will not increase yer hook-up ratio (the larger hook only gives more holding power)......sometimes fish just won't eat the larger bait properly,, other times you need to let em have just a few seconds to get it right...... Many times it's just small rat bass or gillers pecking at the tail which is very common on any ribbon or curly tail bait....
Good luck...

Nope, never. I actually don't fish, I just hang around here trying to soak up some of your vast knowledge. Maybe you can take me out sometime and put me on my very first bass! Man, I'd cut off my left arm to fish with a legend such as yourself. LMFAO!Mike wrote:Tin Can wrote:5/0 Gammy EWG or a 6/0 Superline.

Re: 10" Worm Hook
I myself like to use the owner or Gami 4/0 & 5/0 round bend offset shank and have had good hook up ratios.
My 02 cents...

Re: 10" Worm Hook
Yup Murphy used a #2 mustad bait hook skin hook the sides.... I personally use a 3/0 owner j-hook as that worm doesnt have much in the way of thickness.Andy Giannini wrote:I even use a 4/0 offset worm hook, Owner, and it sticks fish with regularity. Re: 10" Worm Hook
I agree. At night I almost always use a Superline Gami hook - 4/0 and 5/0. 6/0 almost seems overkill to me - and a bit thick. 10" Power worm is still the best ever for big worm applications!!

Re: 10" Worm Hook
OK, That answers the question for the hook size, but what type and size of weight are you using for these monster size worms ?, I am assuming that you gents are brass and glass, Tex rig em. or Carolina style ? I have some black 10" worms but haven't thrown em in the Delta yet. What are your preferred colors in the Delta and manufacture ? Is tungsten better than brass ?

Re: 10" Worm Hook sinkers
I like those Ultra Steel sinkers. They are fat and have a hard surface, to resist snags. Regular brass weights are really pointy and wedge easily in rocks especially in lakes with shale type rocks. Lead sinkers are heavier, but also more grippy in a wedge situation. I don't think lead can be beat for something like punching though. A big lead sinker makes a big hole so your bait can follow it through the cover. (Its tougher to punch with curly baits, a plain straight Creme worm is ideal for doodling under mats.)
Tungsten is neat, but most of them seem to be smaller. For snag resistance I want the sinker bigger/lighter. I think my favorite steel one is 1/4 or less. The Power Worms are already pretty heavy. I use the first one that is full size in diameter, and it matches the worm size perfect.
Colors on the Delta? Red Shad, Black/Blue, Pumkin, Black/blue fleck, Junebug, etc. (I have one 100 count of Black/chart stashed away in my bombshelter supplies, with my other survival gear.)
A weightless ten inch Powerworm swims really well for jerkworming, or on mats and then swimming off the edge.
For curltail fishing the 10 inch Powerworms are ideal. For simplicity I don't even carry 7 inch worms, I just pinch off a big worm if I need a shorter one.

Re: 10" Worm Hook sinkers
I appreciate all of the advice. This forum is a great tool for fishermen. Thanks Brent

Re: 10" Worm Hook sinkers
I prefer to fish these on a Texas rig with 1/8oz tungsten. I really havnt fished them on the Delta, but this is my go to rig for lake fishing.
I have also been known to C-Rig them.

How about you just worry about not getting banned for the 3rd time in a month instead of wasting time worrying about me.Iafrate94505 wrote:Mike wrote:Tin Can wrote:5/0 Gammy EWG or a 6/0 Superline.

Re: 10" Worm Hook
I like the 1/8 to 1/4 oz weights Trig 10 power worm in in Junebug and Blue fleck and Black And Purple.
I use this mostly on Clear Lake myself.
I hate the way the ribbon tail wraps around the reeds/tules when I use em on the Delta. my 02 cents.
