Hey all so I went whitewater rafting this last weekend and lost my sunglasses, so I am in the market for a new pair.
I have decided to get a pair of Wiley X glasses and am wondering what color lenses you all think would be best. I am used to a green lenses and I am not sure if Wiley X makes something that color. I have thought about the blue reflective ones but am again not sure. Please let me know what you all think as to what color Wiley X lenses I should look for.
What up TDawg - sorry to hear about losing your sunglasses that SUCKS.
I wear prescription Glasses and FINALLY pulled the trigger to have a pair of Wiley X made in my prescription - I have the Route frames, they have the padded goggle insert with the Emerald Mirror Tint. I friggin love these glasses the tint is not blue its actually a rose hue to it and are very good in low light and extreme light conditions - very versitile and my depth preception for site fishing has increased ten fold - LOVE EM.
Wiley X does make a Green Mirror tint, I thought hard about getting a frame style that supported this lense, but I wasnt sure if I would like it all the time and since it was prescription I needed them to be multipurpose - Like I said I am very happy with the Emerald Tint - its Awesome in all conditions but night time - I am very happy with the Route frames they block the wind and sun from the side without the goggle insert - but its nice to have that insert when the bugs are thick, its raining, or really windy.
I have the Zack model with the blue mirror lenses. Not sure if the color is called emerald. I enjoy them. I find them Perfect in extreamly bright conditions. I find They have a darker tint than normal polarized glass. If I could change anything it would be a tighter fit on my small melon.
STAY AWAY FROM WILEY X!!!!!! Thier warehouse is in Livermore, Ca and I use to deliver their propane anyway I got hooked up (discount price)all the time with shades Top Jimmies, Blink,etc... and the lens scratch super easy, the frames will crack on you lens will pop out , the rubber insert will dry out. they are cheaply made overseas and sold at a premium here. I have like 5 pair all broke and yes I called Wily X and they told me those were before the warranty I would go with Oakly or costa Del mars this is just my Personal opinion on a product you asked about I am not gunning for one company or anything like that . I am not sponsored by anyone true honest opinion here is a pair of my Top Jimmies like new but the frame just cracked for no reason .
I have owned at least 8 pair of Wiley X and have never seen any pear break that wasn't sat on or stepped on. They are rated to take shrapnel impact at 150 feet per second for the military and are ANZI87 rated for OSHA safety compliance. The reason I don't have all 8 pair is because I have shared them with friends and family; including my cousin, a Marine who just left on his third tour to the gulf. I wouldn't have given them to him if they would break.
I did have an emblem pop out of one pair of the XCess though; but it was one of the prototypes that came out early, and the glue wasn't completely perfect in the prototyping of the logo on the new shades.
As far as the lens with the Amber lens with emerald green mirror; I really like it. It brightens everything up, but you still have relaxed vision. Wiley X has eight layers of polarization, so they have great visual clarity and I clean all of my glasses and my camera lenses with microfiber cloths so that they don't scratch.
Yes, I know several people employed at Wiley X, but I really like the product; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
As far as the rubber on the frames; I owned three different pair of Costas I got when Future Pro Tour was sponsored by them, and all of them dried up and cracked off, making them unusable. What I discovered was that I was leaving them in my truck, and the heat in the summer was doing the damage.
A little care of everything makes it last a lot longer.
Love my Wiley X, I own several pairs and have never had a problem. I keep them in their case in the glove box of my boat when not in use. If you take care of your stuff it should last no matter what brand it is, but eventually everything breaks I don't care what brand it is.

Plastic lens glasses like Wiley X don't last long, especially if you are of the type that wipes them off on your T-shirt. I find premium glass lenses last alot longer and don't scratch up to a point of being unusable in less than a year. Maui Jim is excellent. Costas are probably pretty good too.
If you are the type that loses or steps on glasses, get some cheap Strike King polarized or similar, they work well until scratched up
The plastic lens glasses are real popular with pro-staff types that get free new ones all the time... but if you are paying retail I would spend more and get a higher quality product that will last!! the plastic lens is great when new, but not long until it's so milky and scratched up you can't use em!
On the flip side I had my Maui Jim's fall off my head and land on the sidewalk, cracked one of the lens, that's an $80 repair for one lens! But you can't scratch them with your t-shirt!
The Lens material for Wiley-X is Poly Carbonate and is designed to protect your eyes from impacts. It is also coated with several layers of coatings to provide good optical qualities. They will scratch if not cleaned properly. I have been wearing them daily for probably 6 years now and have never broke a pair of frames. They are tough because they are designed for military use, but if abused they can be broken like any other set of glasses.
Go with the polarized green lens as it is the best all around, but make sure you get a set of frames that fit you properly. Out of the current models my favorite is the ZAK or the HYDRO.
The optical quality of the Wiley-X glasses is incredible, but due to the lense coatings the glasses have to be carefully cleaned. Rinse them with warm water, then use a gritless soap and you finger tips to clean the lense and rinse with water. Dry with a soft clean cotton tee shirt. I have not scratched a pair doing this and I have many pairs that I clean very frequently. Trying to clean them with the tee shirt you have been wearing all day in a Lake Havasu sand storm and no soap or water will probably lead to scratched lenses, don't ask me how I know.
There was a test done on TV (Good Day Sacramento) on a lot of sunglasses from different manufacturers. They said the Oakleys had by far the clearest lenses on the market.
And one more thing to consider, If you have a boat or spend time on a boat you know your going to get water dropplets on the lens if in rough water or just from water blowing off the trolling motor when you run are you gonna want to take out that little fiber cloth to clean your glasses or are you just going to want to dip em in the delta or lake water and dry em up with your t shirt ? Go with a good lens I second Oakley or Costas
Dom,
Any good set of glasses has coated lenses. The coatings are what scratch, not the lens material. No matter what you wear I would be very careful about dipping them in the lake and wiping them off with a dirty shirt, it is just a bad practice that will lead to more damaged glasses.
Just my 2cents and I do not have any bones to pick. My partner bought a pair, I forget what style but they had the foam inserts. They looked good, but lasted a season or two before breaking. The material got pretty brittle after some time in the sun.
