Why Purple worms #1????...I asked Dave Gliebe...

Post by Shad*Wizard »

that question after hearing on Bill Dance Outdoors that Homer Circle had done a survey and Purple was the #1 color for plastic worms...Dave said take a look at a nightcrawler under ultraviolet light and you'll see the purple hues...Hmmm, makes sense to me...

Thanks Dave...He's guiding now and it might not be a bad idea to check him out if you want to learn some new tactics...10 bass for 106 lbs in one day a few years back, maybe he'll show you the pattern he used...Out of respect, I'll keep it to myself for now...

Coooch and BDBR, go for it!!!...That's 106 lbs!!!...Har!...

I have thought about this myself..... A night crawler is less than 1% of a bass food chain and there are no ultraviolet lights on the lake..... the theory does not make sense to me.... I use a lot of purple and wondered the same thing for a long time. I have done some research on this as well... The reason I came up with is that Crawdads have a lot of blue and purple in them.....Cooch posted some pictures some time back of some crawdads that were bright blue...here is one I found.....

I'll never forget what I was told years ago when I first started fishing for bass. Purple and Motor-oil were the best colors for bass.

Some animals, however, do see a broader color spectrum than we see. I don't know if bass are one, but for sure insects use that ability in plant identification. What we see *** yellow might not appear yellow to them at all. Deer see in black and white i believe.

I always figured that Purple to a bass associated with a blue gill? Either way when I first started bed fishing long ago on Calero I found that purple seemed to elicit a very fierce strike when placed on/near the bed. I think that's why I've associated it with a blue gill.

I agree with Dave, wholeheardtedly...My shad buddy raises worms for a living and even he agreed about the colors in the nightcrawler...Xman did mention the motor-oil hues on worms we use to fish with...

After I asked Dave about purple worms being #1, he did proceed to pull out a favorite jig of his, he was really proud of it...I won't tell you what color it was, Har!...Oh those brown and purple jigs I use to fish with before I went out clamming...

Can anyone describe to me what color a nightcrawler actually is?...

Out at Loma after a big rain, there's thousands and I mean thousands of earth worms on the roads...Those worms are being pushed into small feeder creeks that feed into the lake...Can you imagine what those bass might be feeding on when the crawdads are hibernating and the shad have died off?...I'll give you one guess...

Now we can add in the purple hues I saw when catching threadfin shad around the Antioch area and the purple on the baby blue-gills stuck in our dip nets over at Big-Break harbor...Yep, lot's of purple in nature, Think Purple, Think Purple!...

Plus they have now come out with coffee flavored plastics some say the idea from the old fishermen putting coffee grounds in with the nightcrawlers...Man what things are we missing here that have been left out...Hey Johnny Morris, I've got an idea, Har!...

Thanks Dave Gliebe again for your insight...When Dave speaks, I listen...I was clamming in the 70's on the delta, but Dave and Dee were out there way before that...I remember not seeing bass boats out there at one time...Can you imagine that...Just flippers running around in little aluminums, har!...

Its the reflected light from objects that we animals interpret differently. My wife paints. People are always saying how much her colors "Pop". I complain they are drab. Finally found out I'm slightly red green color blind and most of her palette is in my no see zone. Now she ignores me. ;-)

Just and example

I went out with Dave on Saturday, and while the fishing wasn't great, the experience was! 8)

Dave doesn't say a lot, but when he does it usually is something you want to pay attention to! He certainly showed me a lot about the Delta...I sure hope I can remember those spots once the weather warms up! I highly reccommend going out with Dave if you want to learn more about the Delta. Dave has more tournament bass fishing knowledge than most of us ever will and it sure is cool to listen to him talk about the old days!

Thanks again for a great day on the water Dave!!! :D

Most animals have visual capabilities that far surpass that of humans. Hawks that feed on rodents see ultraviolet light because the trails of urine the rodents leave as they crawl around (most do this constantly as they walk leaving scent trails for themselves) have a virtual map of where rodents have traveled and where they are at.

One thing I noticed about shad at Contra Loma is they have a purplish and pink tinge to the way light reflects off the scales close to their back which tends to be more emerald green than dark green to black.

I was trying to remember what I read about the color purple and it just dawned on me who wrote the article, it was a 4 page article in BassWest or one of the top bass magazines last year and it was writen by Aaron Martins, do you know who he is?:) Anyway he had his top 5 worms in color in the article, yes they made a worm for him and they call it Aarons magic, he said in the article that purple which is in Aarons magic along with brown is the last color spectrum that can be seen in the deepest water, even more visable than black in the deepest water, it made sense to me because I was smoken them at Clear Lake in 15-30 feet of water on Margareta Mutalator which has alot of purple.

I have seen crawdads in Red, Brown, Purple and black, I have even seen them in all 4 colors at the same time.

With crawdads having purple and purple being the last color spectrum that can be seen in deep water, it just make sense that its a great color.

I love this sport, come on pre spawn!!!!

I think this whole worms thing has gotten completely out of hand.

Worms aren't cruisin the lake or Delta. They breathe air. If you see one in a puddle after a rain, he is wrigging to his death, or already dead.

Worms kick butt as live bait because they are slim, smell/taste good, (nature's Powerbait.) and are impaled, wriggling in death throes.

Plastic worms, are a more durable version of the real ones, with a lotta rubber wiggling going on, and more color choices.

There aren't ANY huge schools of worms swimming around!

I am not going to venture near the color topic, its right up there with sex, politics, and religion.

Rubber worms did really well, but fish quit biting them somewhere in the mid eighties.

Andy, Andy, Andy...The importance of the thread is the color were talking about...I read about a guy throwing a frog one day and I believe it was white, he got out a marker pen and proceeded to color it and he said it turned a cool purple...He proceeded to put one of the biggest whoopen's ever on some topwater fish...Can you imagine if SnagProof came out with an All Purple Frog!...Wow, there's a new one for ya!...Purple Frogs!...Let's see what Barrack and Rojas can do with a Purple one, Har!...I want a royalty on that one SnagProof and Spro!!!!!!!!!!...

And the Watson Rat, yeah, call him and tell him you want a Purple Rat! What?... There are no purple rats out there, you can't do that...The biggest bass I ever caught was with Dee down south and I was throwing a blue/pink deer hair SlamDunk Shad*Wizard Special Buzzbait made from left over deer tails...Dee looked at me after he netted it and said "Let me see that thing"...Afterwards he just shook his head...The old Italian Phil from Pittsburg use to tell me when we were out catching mudsuckers, "You got to have SAVVY, boy"!...

Say Hi to Jerry and Butch when you see them, and I better not see any purple Timber Tigers either!!!!...Har!...

Maybe we can call them Donny's after that guy that sang "Puppy Love"!!!!!!...Didn't he wear purple socks?...Har!...Yeah, that sounds good, I got him on a "Donny"...Go for it, Andre!...

I remember purple Wrats, and I think he made some pink ones too.

We did honestly have some purple Tigers. They were a special deal that I had asked for. The test colors ran from different shades of blue, into purple, and wandering into peanut butter and jelly!

The thought behind it was getting away from red cranks, and having something like the popular jig colors. They worked really well. Those test baits are prized ones in my box, I don't give them away at raffles.

Purple is good.

Another weird thing I asked for was clear Tigers, no paint nothing.

One of the biggest whoopin's I ever got was by Jerry B...He used those clear Wiggle Warts with a little touch of brown on top...He only had one on him that day, and the whole day I had to sit there and get beat up by that lure!...
