Which braid line is worth the money?

Post by Kevin Shin »

Since we got north & south merged forum(me coming from south and hardly used braid before),,,,and planning to fish clear lake and delta stren soon,,,I have this question.

Which braid line is THE best?
If you can explain why also.

I need to spool some reels up with braid line.

I feel if your casting topwater, frogs, spinnerbaits.........just making long cast in general.. I feel suffix is smoother. If your just flipping, pitching or punching save 10.00 and go with power pro.

For me power pro is all i use.top water, crank baits, frogs, and sometimes drop shot.To me it dosen't back lash and dig into your spool as other braids do.I fish san diego lakes and will be at clear lake flw march...

Kevin,
I would suggest going with power pro. I have used other, and never really liked them. They either flet flat, or kinda like dental floss, just really flat. PowerPro to me feels more round and I like the texture of it in my hands.

On a side note, sense you said you said you had hardly used braid before, I want to give you a little tip that can and will prevent alot of frustration. Leave, or put on, about 10-15 yards of mono backing at the bottom of the spool. Then using a uni-uni knot connect the braid to the mono. What this does is if you hook into a big hard fighting fish, and you DONT have the mono backing on the braid will just slip and spin on the spool, and you wont be able to reel that big fish in or you will have some problems with getting it into the boat. If ya already knew about this then forget I said it, but I hope it helps ya out!

I've used Power Pro for years and think it is great braid. I know many Pros I travel with swear by it. I've been experimenting with Toray's new braided line. Toray is the number one line used in Japan, and produce premier fluorocarbons and monos. The new Toray braid has thinner diameter, has more strands, and rounder. It is marketed as "Super Power Finesse" line. The prototype version has "strike indicators" (every few feet white marks) as part of the dye process. For line watchers, hard to miss any little "tic". I've used it for top water walking baits, frogs-toad, night fishing giant worms, and punchin'. I'm not sure when it will be released, but it is excellent braid.

I have had good results with the Powerpro braid in the past, except the color fades fast. The Toray braid is excellent and available at Tackle Warehouse. You can also see the other Blackwwater int.-Toray products on their site, there is a link below.

What Jason said...plus the PowerPro doesn't seem to dig into itself as much as some of the others

Stren Superbraid also fades fast...it shows up like a rope in the water. I just thought it was pretty much normal for all braids. BTW, the Stren is my second choice right behind PowerPro.

To take care of the fading, get a Sharpie Magnum permanent marker and slit the tip with a razor blade. Then pull off a few yards of line, put the line in the slit and reel it back in.

I have never used anything but Power Pro, so I can't comment on the others. However, I use 50 lb on 5 of the 8 rods I usually use. I fish the delta alot! Only problem I have had with braid is that it will slice quick if a fish runs it accross rocks. Some say flouracarbon for flippin rocks, but I just love the braid. I think its just a confidence thing. Anyway........Power Pro! :!:

I think the Sufix braid is the best out there. I used Power Pro for several years with no issues, but in the last 1-2 years me and a few others I know have had several breakage issues while using it. I've had it snap several times at random places along the line while using the 20 and 30lb test, sometimes while simply casting or working a bait!! Their quality control must be on a downward spiral. I will never use that garbage again...

I have been using spider wire for years am was happy with it. A friend told me to try power pro which I did but did experience breakage with it especially when working jigs over rough bottoms. Went to Suffix and am very pleased with it and it holds it color well. Will continue to use Spider wire and Suffix but never Power Pro again.

I was like power as well but I have been using Tuff Line Braid recently, and I am loving it. It is softer then Power Pro right out of the box which makes it easier to work with and cast, it is also a whole lot cheaper than Power Pro.

Im not sure if this is due to the braid, im pretty sure it is. But i throw swimbaits with the power pro and every now and then it seems like it sticks on the cast. A buddy of mine swears by the suffix and i tried it and it casts further and had zero hang ups. It seems like the suffix is rounder and the power pro is flatter and thats what caused the problems. I use the suffix for open water and i use the power pro for the veg. The flatness of the power pro seems to cut through the veg better ( atleast thats what i talked myself into thinking ) I dont have nearly the experience with braid as the delta boys do though. Maybe they can help me clear my thought process as well.

ill never use anything excet for the Stren Super braid. Ive tried the power pro, and let me tell you this. when splicing a leader into it you can break the splice by pulling on it hard. i cant even come close to breaking a splice with the super braid when pulling with my hands. My conclusion is the Power pro is much much stiffer line therefor the spliced leader line cuts through it easier. The super braid isnt nearly as stiff and i cant do it withmy hands. dont know if it means anything but im pretty sure it does. if i can do it with my hand everytime i wont trust it on a 10er that needs to get boat flipped. to each his own i guess. thats why the forum is great. you hear all sides. do the trial and error your self and see which one works best for your mental happiness.

oh yeah. ive used the same 65 lb for over a year on one of the big bait rods. the only reason i change it is because ive retied so many times there isnt enough line left. not sure if the power pro lasts as long as i ripped it off after doing the splice test. i aint sponsored by anyone this is just my own experience. good luck.

i will second littlebailey on this....the Stren Super Braid is the smoothest and again its splicing is the best! I've experienced the same with the spliceing pulling apart...

You will like the McCoy Mean Green Braid. It's the most user friendly braid on the market. Why?

The individual spectra fibers are poly saturated before the line is wound into a round cross section. This gives you longer life, longer cast and less water absorption. You can also tie the knot of your choice instead of having to relearn a new know.

Thanks for the inputs guys..

I know that yellow box is the most popular one but didn't know I had so many choices.

I'll buy the small spools for a few brands and see which one I like.

At least now I know what to watch out for or want from braided lines from these inputs.
