When to replace trolling motor batteries

Post by paulisaak »

When should I replace my trolling motor batteries. Right now I having a problem. My on line battery charger is green saying my trolling batteries are charged. But my trolling will not work. The trolling motor is a 65AT Minn Kota a few years old. The batteries are 2 1/2 years old Walmart Everstart. I used a voltage tester on verything and its says I have voltage. The circit braker is on all termails are clean. I even put on another trolling motor and nothing. Could it be the batteries have the voltage and not the amps to turn the motor.

Sounds more like it's the TM not the batterys. Test the voltage at the plug and then check your connections on the plug itself. It may be corroded or even a broken wire. If those are good, try the TM with other batterys to make sure it is running. You can take your batterys to O'Rilley Auto Parts and they will LOAD test them for free. Some batterys only last 2-3 yrs Wall-Mart batterys don't hold up as long as some better quality ones, but then at the price you can afford to replace them every 2-3 yrs. Good luck

I think if it was a battery issue you would be getting some juice to the tm to spin it, maybe not fast or hard but some - do you have two other batteries (even car batteries) to connect to see if its a matter of power? My GUESS is its the switch at the TM

I had a similar problem and cleaned all the battery connections and that took care of it.
