What is your favorite crank bait to Throw?

Post by Scoot549 »

What is your favorite crank bait to throw? And when should I use them and how. I have had only one good day using one and that was it. It was an overcast day with a little rain and I was using a Bomber 7a deep diver from the shore line. I was just bumping it on the bottom and just about every other cast I hooked up. It was very exciting but I have not been able to catch a fish since. Thanks for any tips or tricks given. Fill free to pm.

Mine used to be a Baby Bass colored shallow runnig Bomber A..Here lately I have been catching more on Speed Traps and lipless type crankbaits..I haven't found any real tricks to using any crankbait to be more successful..I just keep plugging away and hoping to land some..I have found that if you get into a good crankbait bite you can have a ton of fun..

I like to throw the Rat-L-Traps. Find the legend series in 3/4 oz any one of those colors work! If im sruggleing with it Ill give a few good rips every now and then just to see if I cant get a reaction also the LV-500 works really well to in ghost mnnow and spring and mad craw!

As far as actual crankbaits I like the Norman Deep Little N in lavender shad and smokey joe. Again if Im stuggleing Ill give it a few good rips just to see if I can get a reaction! I also like the MR Big Daddy(I think thats what its called) in Spring and Mad Craw!

I hope this helps some!

My go to Crank Bait is also the Normans Deep little N. I do keep a variety of cranks on tap depending on where I am fishing.

All my favorite crank baits are still in my tackle box's for two years now (not used). DD 22's Mans 20+, pointers, Stacys, Sanded shad raps ( all white) DT's, Speed traps, rattle traps, and on.... I can't say I had a favorite but the pointers were fun for numbers. Even before I started swimbaiting I liked the bigger baits for better size fish. It did not always work out that way LOL! I look at them but cant pull myself to use them any more LOL!!! Crank baits are more work then a swimbait  LOL!! Anyone got like a 3:16 Wake Jr they want to trade? I would think NO. LOL!!

Norman DD 22's, various colors depending on wate clarity. I throw them on off water structure (like rock piles, they float which is extremely important when fishing snaggy areas) or any kinda break line, including outside weedlines.

Unlike many others I fish with, I do not throw a crank unless I can dig bottom with it (the Delta is different, Ill swim one out there). The 22's go fairly deep so they can fish a decent range of water depths. And I will throw them in fairly shallow water even though Im dredging the bottom.

The 22's are affordable, they flat out work, and they work in a fairly broad range of water depths. I like the little N's also, but they dont go near as deep so for me they have less utility.

LV 500 in American and Chatrueuse shad patterns
Megabass Deep-X 200T
DD 22

On Clear Lake I do best when the bait is constantly banging off the bottom structure.

I throw lipless cranks baits 80% of the time. I toss the SPRO and Rat-l-Trap models best. Color is what the hatch dictates.

Lipless are so versitile, heck dead of winter on a blue bird sky 29 degree day you can catch BASS with a dead stick and quick pop.

Lipless are my confidence/go-to bait.

A good ole Bagleys DBIII in Chartruese belly, orange chin and dark blue/black back. On the Delta it's the same color pattern, but a Bomber Fat 6A.

Toss em anywhere, year round, especially when it's overcast and raining. Bass just eat this pattern.

I'm with Jigs any size or color of the DT's. I have a garage full of them. I can throw them any time, any where. Shad or Crawdad colors.

I really really really like the CB20's by Lucky Craft... but they do take on water after a few fish... By a few fish, it could be 5, or 50. Either way, it really digs down and into the bottom. Taking on water is unacceptable though.

That Bomber A has been one of the best all around med diving cranks ever made,, stick with it.... Mix in a Rat-L-Trap 1/2 oz 34r (red craw) and yer good ta go. The Norman Deep little N is another good one and lots of people swear by the Speed Traps... personally I stopped buying Speed Traps cause they break way to easily for me,, but the thin plastic is part of what gives em such good action.

For me it depends on the time of year and water clarity.

My favorites are the deep little N

original wiggle wart and a few of the evergreen cranks that I have purchased on line.

Your sick with it too Gary  Mr Mickey is the best hard bait maker out there. We will be getting some new ones to use very soon (baby wake 6") in about a month. :D
So when are we fishing? We should go tear up the Delta. Or.......something new.

Are you guys for real? Are there people out there paying that much for this Lure. (7.5" Wake Jr. @ $79.99 / each). I hope someday I can find one hooked to a log so I can try one. But I guess if you can aford to spend that much on lures, you probably have Scubba Gear as well. LOL... Anyone want to donate one to me can pm me and I will give them my address.

Scoot,

I believe in them enough that I bought three of them...the Rainbow, Silver Ayu, and Golden Ayu...and in my opinion their results have paid for them  First fish I caught was 13.67 and was part of a 35 lb limit that day :D I have never seen so many BIG fish since I started throwing this bait!!!

Scoot,

The 13 was caught using 17# Sunline Shooter Defier (thought I was using 22#). I am now throwing them on the 22#. I have cast them away a couple of times due to being lazy and not retying often enough, but have also got them back. You periodically will catch the hooks on the line during long hucks if you don't get the bait to fly right and therefore the hooks can nick your line. One time, I just tied a bad knot  you'll never see somebody fire the TM up ta 100% so fast. I also broke a donkey of first cast of the morning once after fishing several hours with it the day before and being in too much of a hurry to get the bait wet and not thinking and not retying it before starting. I got to watch this big girl trash about until she shook the bait loose...thank goodness they float

I did finally break the tail off my original one on Sunday after the wind help guide it onto the rocks three casts in a row (the third time the bait landed tail first right on a rock :x and the tail snapped) It is always fun when the fish want the bait 6 inches from a rocky bank and the wind is blowing right at the bank  yer gonna hit the bank sooner or later. 3:16 just had me send the bait back so Mickey can make it like new again :D

I too Love these baits. They are the big part of my best 5 fish limit at 53 lbs even, 17 fish total caught that day. It's ok if you think they are to much. That just means the fish wont see them like the hudds and others. If you don't like the bait send it back and 3:16 will refund your money. No biggie. Mickey takes great pride in his work. He is hard on himself on making a high quality product. I bought my first 1up at the ISE show a year ago and they will not even hit the market till around Oct this year. I was lucky to get one. That should tell you 3:16 takes their time in what they put out there for us, a great product not junk to just make a buck.
