A rod company that has alot of light rods. Not action light, just light in general.

Kistler Helium 2 LTX. The lightest and most sensitive rod I have found so far and I have about 60 rods, now that is all I use.

My rods are very light. I've never weighed a single one. I can certainly make them lighter. I want a certain diameter blank (smaller diameters look far better to me and are usally heavier)

Balance and feel are really more important than light. Yes they should be light also. But I could hand you a 4.5 oz rod and a balanced 6 oz rod that would feel lighter in your hand.

Please go into your local shop and pick them all up. The balanced ones will just rest in your hand.

The better the material the lighter the blank.

Also, the reel you choose plays a role in how the rod feels in your hand, no matter how light or heavy the rod. Put a reel on any stick you're checking out — you might be surprised at the difference.

I think jazz has got a good point. I own GLX's Steez Phenix Powell. I buy the rod for a specific action or technique and the balance of the reel makes a big difference.

Guys i'm not wanting to start a war or nothing. BUT unless you are talking about something as light as a Steez, the better reels weigh close enough they don't make a big difference in the balance. If the rod is balanced to begin with, it will feel GREAT with any reel. If it's out of balance a little I believe it feels better with a reel on it. If it's way out like many rods, it's just going to be tip heavy no matter what reel you use.

Just my thoughts.

   Funny story I go in the Hook Line and Sinker 3 to 4 times a week to just pick up each Rod,just waiting till I get the money. And I am blown away with how light they are. And once I do get the money almost all of my rods are going to be Dobyns. I already have them picked out. I just have never fished with one. But already I know that they are amazing.

I think Gary is being a little modest here.
DOBYNS RODS has a 704 CB Glass rod that is 7' med action with a fast tip that weights 4.6oz.
Oh by the way this rod got Tackle Tours Editors Choice Award.

You would think dobyns made a rod. balance is the key a light rod without balance is nothing . dobyns rods has all the above. ive had custom rods that just don't have the balance right.

I would have to agree, most of my reels are in the low to mid 7oz range. But I just got a g1 dobyns extreme 764 and put a fuego(7.6oz) on it and it felt great but when I put the zillion(8.6oz) it barely felt like I had a rod in my hand even though it was a 1oz heavier combo. At the same time Gary is right, almost all the good reels out right now are close in weight(except for a core 50, steez or a tricked out TDZ) and should feel about the same on the rod.

I will also agree with what others have said, out of all my rods the three dobyns I own are the best ballanced rods I have ever had.

Not trying to start an argument, but I do have a question in regards to a balanced rod. If a rod is balanced that means that when you are holding it at the reel seat like you are fishing it. The rod would balance in your hand because the fulcrum is your hand? That I believe I understand but we fish with a lure on the end and then there is the resistance of the lure and line in the water when you pull the lure forward by lifting the tip. Do rod manufacturers compensate for this so that the butt is heavier than the tip and is that the reason for lure ratings on rods. It seems like that would need to be the case for a truly balanced rod?

I hear guys saying that a balanced rod is very important but if it is only balanced without a lure on the end and does not factor in some additional weight for resistance in the water then it will still be tip heavy when fishing correct? Although less tip heavy than a rod that does not balance in your hand without a lure on the end that is being worked in the water.

It seems to me that a truly balanced rod would have the butt changeable weight system. It is important how it feels when we are fishing with it not how it feels in the store right? I think you can see where we are going here right?

If a heavier but balanced rod feels better then it is the wrist muscles that we are trying to have to work less right? I mean most of my combos are probably 10- 14 oz and that is not a lot of weight to me.

I am not trying to start an argument, sell rods or refute anything previously said by others but come to a better understanding of this.
Thanks
Rich

Hey Josh,
Can ya make it out to Contra Loma any time soon? If ya want we can meet up ill bring a bunch of rods so you can actually fish with them. Let me know what models you want to try out. Im about to walk out the door, when I get back I'll post up a list of the rods I have. We can make multiple trips put that way we dont have to lug around 12 rods and 50lbs of tackle LOL
