What's The best frog rod????
What's The best frog rod????
Howdy,
I wan't to purchase a frog rod here in the new future and was hoping you guys might shed some light on what you like, dislike or have heard about the frog rods on the market. Right now my 3 top choices would be a loomis, lami or diawa. I would like a stiffer rod so I can pull those little green things out of the mats. So please share your opinions with me as i am sure other people have the same question. As always I greatly apreciate your time and knowledge. Thanks

Contact Steve at stevescustomrods.net - I have his frog rod and love it. You will get a custom rod built to your specs for the same price or less than some of the rods you listed.

Re: What's The best frog rod????
I use the Loomis frog rod but it feels like a telephone pole after throwing the bait all day long. Seems like the "heavy cover" is always a concern but I try to get em out asap and skid them along the surface. I think the loomis is okay but I would look for something that you can throw all day long without tearing yourself up. RR

Re: What's The best frog rod????
My personal choice in frog rods is the Lamiglas 766 Flipping stick. It pitches the frog awesome, has all the power you need and handles braid very well and when your not frog fishing it is an awesome 7'6 flippin stick. This is the only frog rod I have used for the last 5 years.
Good Luck!

Re: What's The best frog rod????
I don't throw frogs that much, not much slop down here in So.Cal. where I fish. But, when I do, I need a rod with a soft enough tip to cast them, so I use a med. heavy 7' rod or a 7'6" med. heavy, with 50lb. braid. The frogs I throw are all about 1/2oz.
Am I missing something? Is there a better action to throw them? I tried a flipping stick, 7'6" heavy, but I couldn't get enough distance.

Re: What's The best frog rod????
go with the Kistler frog and slop, or the Powell. I have both and love them. what I like most is that they both are a great balance for throwing braid. fast tip and some flex for powerfull hooksets with out RIPPING the frog from the fishes mouth. the design of both of these rods lets the braid do its magic, in getting good hook pentration. both rods are more then enough power (in my opinion) to water ski them too the boat. but I know that some guys like the 8ft 807 or 808 lami rods..for the muscle and power and I agree with them but they are just too big for me.
I learned on my flippin stick and now I know why they arent designed for froggin propperly, they do work..but not like a real frog rod....its like using your med/heavy or heavy rod for cranking. you will just tear the hooks out more then you would using a medium, or a crankin rod specifically. as far as distance you will never get the same distance with a flipping stick. I get twice the distance with my kistler. its amazing and i throw 65lb PowerPro. also with a fippling stick becarefull you can really get digs on your reel causing the worse backlash. if your not careful.
Swimbait rods are great for more power if you want...because they still have some flex. NO flipping sticks..save those for what they are designed for....flipping.
Peace

Well there you have it. I guess the flipping stick won't work so I will have to chuck out 10 years of frog fishing and everything I have learned about that bait. Hope you find a rod. Raver you can cast twice as far than you can with a flipping stick, damn I need some lessons.

Re: What's The best frog rod????
you know what KB,
dont take that sooo personally geez.. I did NOT say they dont work. I learned on mine... and I had problems casting..and getting the distance and all the other things that happen on flipping sticks when you try to chuck a small frog on them ..Flipping sticks work fine....but not as nice as a "Frog" Rod. even a swim bait rod worked better for "ME". thats fine if you use a flippin stick. 10 years its hard to accept new ways.. like i said I used one for a while...then read these forums..and talked to credible people and got shown the way..
XXXBASS asked for opinions and alls he got were Flippin sticks...
so I posted about frog rods..
theses are great forums..but its annoying some times posting on them..always some drama LOL
everyone is a know it all..me included
so try out both rod XXXBASS and see what works for you. whats nice is you probably have a flippin stick already...just get a frog rod. it works awesome for spooks, jigs, texas etc. the Powell 735 MH Flip Ex-Fast rod is irronically a "frog/Flippin rod"
how funny is that?!!
Peace

Re: What's The best frog rod????
All right here is my answer for what it is worth. Everybodys different meaning size, strength, hight ect. Also I didnt really think about this till recently untill it was brought up but if you are on the front of the boat or the back for rod length. If you are on the front you could get away with the 7'6" or the 8' rods but in the back a 7' or 7'2" it just depends on how tall you are ect. but this is what i do, i have tried everyones suggustions get the loomis imx or get the Powel or the lamiglas or the st croix legend series. but what i ended up doing is ordering some shimano Clarus rods that are 69.00 in all shapes and sizes and found out what i like the best for the paritcular bait i am throwing. then i upgraded after finding out what size rod, what power, with what line, with what bait. then i upgraded to the nicer rods loomis and st croix rods. but what i still use today for my frog rod is the Shimano Clarus Medium Heavy 7'6" flippin stick. I tried to upgrade for froggin but nothing matched it. but this is where every ones different. I have not had a problem selling any of my Clarus rods for 50.00 bucks to a buddy that is just starting out. So before you go and spend 200.00 to 300.00 or even 100.00 bucks try this out. Then if you dont like any of them go and get a custom rod built the way you would like it. or send me and email and i will take you out and let you use any rod you want for froggin or anything elese. thanks Mike

Re: What's The best frog rod????
Go with the Powell 735 Frog Rod. Best frog rod ever made bar none! I'ts 7'3ft MH Ex-Fast tip with great back bone, perfect for open water or cheeze. Good in price, You can get them at Extreme Outdoorsman in Oakley Ca. They carry the whole line up.
Re: What's The best frog rod????
I use a St.Croix Avid 7'11" flipping stick heavy action. All I can say is I've had very very few missed hook sets. Have been throwing a lot of frogs this year and I've missed only two hook sets, both were my fault (set too early due to excitement). When I wait a second and set AFTER I feel the weight I've not missed a fish yet this year on a frog. Of course sharp hooks helpt too but I think the extra length of the rod combined with braid makes a word of difference. Just my 2cents.

Re: What's The best frog rod????
Like KB, I have used a Lamiglas frog rod for the past five years. The one I'm using is the XFT 797 "Magnum Grass Rod." It is an awesome rod and doubles as an extra-heavy duty flippin stick if needed.
My biggest frog fish (7.4) was handled with ease on this rod, when combined with a Shimano Curado reel and 65 lb Power Pro.
I know that Kent's set up works very well too, since I netted one that was close to 7 during a tournament at Clear Lake a couple of years ago that he caught on a frog.
I have a Loomis frog rod too, but don't see nearly as much action as the Lami.

I have Lamiglas make a special rod for the Hook. It's made for the XC725 blank but has a longer handle and a little different action.
I like it a lot!

I also netted a few nice fatties for kb while using that rod (forgot the name).
I got stuck with him, not one, but two days during the Bassmaster event on the Delta.
kb is proof even a blind man can find the hole every once in awhile.
BTW, I was nice, compared to Roy. That man showed you no respect.

Re: What's The best frog rod????
KB,
"Netted" would be the key word there. Although I did catch some myself, nothing close to that big one you got (which got us both a check).
My dad is very sick (cancer) but the rest of the family is doing well. Just started a huge remodel/addition project that will hopefully be done by Christmas.
Good luck during the rest of the year. All the best to you and your family.
