What size hook for drop shotting robo's?

Post by TonkaKid »

Currently use 1/0 for the 6" fat robo's and #1's for the 4.5 in Robo's. Both in the Gamakatsu drop shot/split shot hooks. Using 8lb fluro, 1/4 oz sinker and catchin fish between 2-5 pounds. Are these too big or am I using the right hook?

I'm not an expert, but I also use #1-1/0 gamagatsu hooks or standout hooks but on 4-6lb flurocarbon line.

For my weights, I've been experimenting.....if I'm going to do a short line - 6in from weight to hook I'll go small, but if I go 2 ft or longer i'll go 1/2 oz.

I've also experimented using smallish jigs as a drop shot weight.

I like gamakatsu #1 or #2 EWGs more bite and I've never noticed any lack of fish (good ones too) using those vs nose hooks.

I use the smallest Gamakatsu drop-shot hooks I can get away with, normally a #4 for 4.5" and 6" Robos. Haven't had any problems. Have caught 1000's of fish on this setup. I use 5Lb Fluoro also.

I drop shot alot. Maybe too much. lol 90% of the time I rig it weedless with a roboworm rebarb hook (1/0-2/0). The other 10% of the time I nose hook my bait with a #4 Owner mosquito hook.

Match your hook size to not only the size of the bait, but also the pound test of your line. For 6lb test and below, use a #4 Gamakatsu Split Shot/Dropshot hook. For 8lb test use anywhere from #4 to #1 depending on the size of the bait. Go bigger with heavier line. The point (pun intended) is that thicker wire hooks need more energy to sink them into flesh, and of course thin wire hooks like the #4 can easily be set with light line.
