what size hook for drop shot?

Post by spotfin »

I hooked onto a 6+ lb bass at the delta today while dropshotting. I use a gamakatsu drop shot #4 hook. The bass jumped and then came off few mins later. I've only caught 4lb bass and smaller on the dropshot, and none have ever come off. I use 10-12 lb test line. I'm beginning to wonder if i should switch to a larger hook so if I get another big one, chances are it won't come off. Anyone have any suggestions? I like to fish roboworms in the delta, six inchers, with hook exposed. I tried using a thin wire number 1/0 worm hook, rigged weedless after I lost the big one, but no bites. Made me wonder if it killed the action.

I will Bubba dropshot with up to a 4/0. For normal dropshot applications, I will use a #1 Gammi. My dad caught a 10 pounder in Florida last year on a #1 and a Trick Worm nose hooked.

If you are using a 6" worm i recommend 1/0 - 3/0 gamakatsu offset shank worm NOT ROUND BEND i think the roundbend kills the action a bit more and that could be because of the wire thickness or the distance between the hookpoint and shank ( gap) for some reason the worm offset shank works the best for me and my buddies.

Also if you are really concerned about action try throwing something different than a straight 6" worm. good luck - lance

For "Bubba Drop Shot" at the Delta and Clear Lake I have had the best luck with a Gammy "G-Lock" 2/0 or 3/0 with a 6"worm. Hooked and landed up to 9.5 For lakes, I use a 1/0. Best so far is a 7.5 I always hook it Texas.

I use the TTI Blakemore StandOut Hooks in all different sizes. 1/0 is the size I reach for most often. I have great success with them.

If I am dropshotting the thick stuff or senkos I will use a W.W. Hook. It has a little loop at the bend for the tag end of your line to thread through which goes down to the weight.
