I like a 7 foot medium heavy. My favorite is a Kistler Helium.

When dragging jigs especially in western waters where you may drag 40 to 60 feet deep you need length for hook sets. You also need sensitivity and balance. Our best dragging rod is DX 784C and it'll work fine with 3/8 to one ounce jigs. Another tip is if dragging straight floro once you set the hook, reel fast and hard to get a good load into the blank and your landing percentage will be very high. This rod also is an excellent C-Rig rod as well. It's almost a forgotten technique in the west but SUPER popular in southern waters like Texas. THX!!!

I've been very happy with the Phenix M1 MX-78H the rod is light and sensitive for dragging jigs along with flippin' jigs. I tend to drag 1/2 - 3/4oz up to 1oz with this rod. For 3/8ths oz I go to my MH rod - the key for me is to be able to discern the bottom composition changes and something that has a bit of tip and plenty of backbone. Phenix is a continued sponsor of the BBT and we appreciate their support https://phenixrods.com/

I have lots of models that will work. The DX 784C is our best for dragging jigs. This model was made specifically for dragging jigs. . But, I have plenty of models that will work very good besides the DX 784C. I have these in all series too. I would try and stay with a rod that's at least 7'3".

If I can help further let me know. THX!!!

Hi Gary, I have the Champion 764 XP that I originally bought for c-rigs but have decided the ball and chain really isn't "my thing", maybe at the right lake in certain conditions I'll try it some more. On your website the 764 "uses" include spiinnerbaits, jigs, small swimbaits, etc. In your opinion, what is the best way for me rig the 764, I have a Megabass SV3 1/2 oz. spinnerbait on it right now but haven't been able to get out and try it yet due to an illness, when it's time for me to get out again should I go spinnerbait or jig with the 764? Thanks!

The 764C is a super versatile rod. Many guys love the length and power of it. It will drag jigs as well. It's a great C-Rig rod. Many guys use it for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, smaller swimbaits up to an ounce, pitching smaller baits. It's a rod that may not be the "perfect" rod for a technique but will still do a very good job. It's always been a good seller as guys that us it, usually have several of them. I also remember it as the very first rod we ever ran out of after starting the company.

Back in 1994 wrote article “Horizontal Jigging” For In -Fisherman published Jan 1995.
The reference is hook setting a jig at 40-50 yards using 6’6” to 6’10” long rods with mono line.
I detailed the reel and rod sweep hook set mention by Dobyns however this was a western technique long before it migrated east.
Longer rods make longer casts easier, not hook sets.
If any interest PM me for a copy of this article.

It's a dying art more anglers should learn. You can turn it into a big fish bite with a little time and effort it works. If you have the patience to do so. With this type weather we're having it's a technique you should be using now.

Abu Garcia Fantasista 7’6” med/hvy up to 1/2 oz jigs or 7’3” hvy for 3/4 oz or heavier. This model is a premium rod and delivers in balance, weight, sensitivity and power. Lots of great rods but this Abu is well worth owning.

Thanks Tom. I live in Texas now but I'll always be a west coast guy. I come back to see grandkids every couple of months and I usually hit the local waters on every trip. Happy Holidays to all the gang here on Western Bass!!!

Thanks Gary, always good to see you interacting. Greatly respect and appreciate you. Have heard nothing but good things about you here out West since I was an kid and you are solely the reason I use your rods. I know if they are good for you they are good, period. Only rod company I have ever encountered that I can give a call and get advice on rods for techniques from Gary himself or one of his team members. All though you are missed here out West I bet you are right at home in Texas. Happy Holidays everyone, sending wishes of good health, happiness, and lots of hook sets!! Also your jigs are excellent, bought a batch last year and they are now my go to! Don’t sleep on them fellas!
