what are the pro saying about Daiwa?

Post by Hortuna36 »

CERRITOS, Calif., April 3, 2007 – With oversized bass and huge amounts of money literally on the line, the top B.A.S.S. pros need to know they can count on the tackle they’re using to perform under pressure. As 2003 Bassmaster Classic champ and 2006 Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli puts it, “These are the tools of our trade – we depend on these products to get the job done, day in and day out, under all types of conditions.â€

Are any of these Pro's sponcerd by Diawa? Or do they pay full retail for there reels. Kinda like asking a Greek who makes the best Olive Oil......The Greeks do of course, no one else comes close 8) And I'm not even paid to say that

Just bought the Steez baitcaster reel. It is by far the best baitcaster reel I have ever used. Lance is right about pro's plugging their products, but I guess that's the name of the game. All I can say that I use to fish Shimano exclusivley but Daiwa has in recent years been putting out some darn good equipment. IMHO

Mind you, all these guys are indeed Daiwa porstaffers, as Ray said. But I do like Daiwa myself. Sure, not like a Powell. But I own several Daiwa rods and reels, I like'em actually. Not the best tools in the shed, but certainly decent ones. Actually, I got to play with a Steez recenlty. They're verry niicce. But, I really don't have the need for a $500 dollar reel. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

Just for the record I use Team Diawa reels. None are better in my experiences. Better drags, bearings and more distance per cast with no back-lash. Rod's are another story, not all that good. Just remember how most pro's make money to take home, land bass. Most sponsorship money goes to expences and entry fee's, not to the bank.

with Fishing becoming so techique specific, reel design and function become a very important factor. Each manufacturers reels have plus and minus qualities. Spool speed and diameters, overall weight, size configurations (do your palm your reel or hold the foregrip), and gear ratio's and drag quality. I use a combination of Shimano and Daiwa reels ultimately its what feels right for you and your style of fishing and what you have confidence in. And by the way, If you guys need to have your reels serviced send me a PM. just my .02

I use Daiwa reels almost exclusively, and love them. The Steez reels are amazing... I've got a baitcaster and a spinning reel, and they are as smooth as can be. I've also got a couple of Zillions, which are my favorite baitcasters now. I really love the Luna reels for fishing swimbaits. Aside from that, I've got a bunch of the Team Daiwa baitcasters, as well as the lower-end line and just love their performance and reliability.

I've been using Daiwa saltwater reels since the SL20SH "anchovy express" reels first came out in the 80's, and have put them to the test catching bluefin, yellowfin and albacore tuna as well as yellowtail, dorado and the other assorted species that are caught on my offshore forays, and have never had a failure. I've now got a mix of several Saltist (30, 40 and 50) reels and Sealine-X (20, 40 and 50) that make up my regulation arsenal, which accompany my Penn International two-speed reels used for the heavy lifting.

When I started out two years ago, I started buying the Daiwa rods and have quite a few. I've since upgraded many to Loomis, but I also have three of the Cielo line which I really like and use regularly. I don't think there are many that can compare to the Heartland line for value/cost.

I'm a satisfied Daiwa customer, and will continue to buy their products until that changes.

Happy Easter everyone!

Come on rick you know before your thing with shimano , shimano was #1 seller. How many of you have taken your Diawa in for service seen how much and how long, now take your shimano in , also how many of you pulled out a new diawa and used it a few times and drag is messed up . I have I use to only buy thse TDZ or x what ever you call them and woud have to take them in for service constatly and get new drags in them shimano haven't had any problems, except for there little green 101 years ago took it in handed a brand new one. diawa took reel in they told me wait ten days and that will be 29 bucks diawa your out. My 401 is in for service last week they said ten days I asked hey Iknow your busy but I sure could use my swimbait rod still could you have it done earlier they said doubt it , but finished it in 5 days love customer service at shimano

Dont even get me going on Diawa vs. Shimano. I grew up with Diawa so when I decided to get back into Bass fishing I naturally looked at and purchaced Diawa reels, 3 to be exact. 2 of the 3 had bad drags, falty parts bunched with bad customer service, this made me switch over to Shimano. Since then I purchesed 5 Chronarchs and 11 Calais, 1 Calais DC, 2 Stellas, 2 MG's and 2 Stradic MGFA Spinning reels. Not one Shimano reel has needed sevice. Diawa's are last weeks dirty T shirts, there over rated piles of bad mechanical garbage, to expensive for what it offers and a 1 year reel at best.

The 3rd reel ended up going to the wife, she doesent use it anymore because it has become "hard to turn", she uses the MG now, its her "best favorite".

My work is done here

My Fuego that I bought 2 years ago was a piece of junk. Never casted right and the drags were jerky. I sent it in for service once after only a month. I sold it on ebay for $108! Shows you what people think they are worth when I was trying to buy used Shimano Chronarch SFs (CH100) that were closing at $145!

Yes these guys are all sponsored by Daiwa and that's what they promote its no different then the guys on these boards pushing the Dobyn's rods, Shimano or Quantum.

It's what we do.

I have 3 of the Daiwa Steez Spinning reels and 2 of the Zillions. In my opinion definitely THE Best spinning reels I have ever owned. Caught tons of fish with em without a hiccup in performance. Haven't had an issue with my Zillion either. Very compact and more comfortable to grip The same size of a 50 mg chronarch and for you Haters out there NO I'm not sponsored by Daiwa I think there just a quality reel. Check em out at Anglers Marine. MP

Delta,

I would turn them down as I turn down Colt Firearms when I was shooting professionally, later I was asked by Springfeild Armory. I cant use anything I dont have confidence in. After my dealings with Daiwa, I lost all confidence in their ability to consistantly produce quality products and support their clients. If you hide the truth and sugar coat reality Daiwa would never know they have a problem.

If I were to sum up everything. I pait over 800.00 bucks to have a bad experience, it was still never fixed. This is bad taste you get as a result.

Lance, since you passionatley dislkike your Daiwa's, I'd be more than happy to take them off your hands.

Daiwa and Shimano are the best. Daiwa's new Steez is sick!

Shimano's service is not even comparable to Daiwa. It is on another level than Daiwa.

I have several TDZ's and I've owned 10-15 TDX's over the years. They are great reels, but the drags stink. Also, the service is expensive and slow.

On another note, the drags on 2 of my new Shimano MG50's is already crap. Also, the paint is peeling off the reel. The service makes up for it though.

In summary, buy what you like.

I agree Brian that the Shimano MG50 is not build to last BUT it hasent needed service yet, cant say that for the Fuego and its at the same price point. Im a big Chronarch and Calias fan. Yes the new Steez is sick but time will tell about its durability, so far my Calais DC hasent failed me. Since the Steez and Calais was on the market at the same time it will be interesting to see who's lasts longer before things start to go south.

Service for my Calais.....48 hours

Do you guys back off your drags after fishing them? I had both Daiwa's and Shimano's drags get sticky because of not backing off on the drags after each use.

Funny, I've yet to have to have any service done to mine, so I guess I'm fortunate in a couple of respects. My reels have gotten a LOT of use, as there has only been one week that I haven't fished at least one day over the last 8 months or so. Actually, thinking about this, I do have one reel that started acting up but it's two years old and their low-end reel (150H), so that's probably to be expected.

I haven't had any drag issues, which become extremely obvious fishing light line as we do here in the Southland, so I guess I'm equally fortunate there as well.

I've got some 15-year old saltwater reels (SL20SH, SL50SH) that are still in service. I'm dilligent about cleaning and greasing them, but they still work great.

I had Shimano gear early on for the salt, and had mixed experiences. My favorite small reel at the time was the Triton Speedmaster IV with the star drag, but unfortunately it went over the side at San Celmente Island due to a clumsy deckhand, and they replaced that model with a 'new, improved' model that just wasn't as good. I also had a TLD20 that had the anti-reverse dog break on a 220lb. blue shark, but when I took it to Shimano in Irvine they looked at it and replaced it on the spot with a new TLD25. That was what you are referring to as great service, and I'd have to agree.

I'm not sponsored by Daiwa, or anyone else for that matter, but I'm an extremely satisfied customer and will continue to buy their gear until that changes.

BTW - I've heard several complaints about the Fuego, so that comes as no surprise. I've got four Fuego spinning reels, and mine work just fine. I'm not all that impressed with them, though, so they get little use. My Steez is my number one spinning reel, followed by the TD-S that I recently purchased, and the Tournament SS closely behind that.

I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience... they are on a par in my opinion.

Tunaman I think you bring up a good point. Most people I know never even take the reels off the rods let alone back off the drags.

I'm a bit different then most guys. When I get home my reels come off my rods with the drags backed down. They go in the house in a reel box my rods get put in the rod rack. I don't leave anything in my boat as well. I take out all of my boxes in put them in the cabinets. I don't like to let stuff just sit in my boat cuz I don't like to carry a bunch of unecessary stuff.

I know for a fact that Daiwa has made it a point to improve the drags in the reels and I have yet to have a problem with them.

Delta,

I back off all drags when I know the reels arent going to get used for a few weeks. I have 2 "sets" of reels and rods, Calais are for fishing on my boat and the Chronarchs are when I'm the backseater. Since I'm into nice looking stuff I wasnet into the idea of having the Calais banged up when I'm a non-boater.

I have to say that I have heard more horror stories on the Daiwa TDX and that drove me to purchase the Chronarch. I later picked up two 50 MG and after using them, was forced to replace all of my old Chronarch's with the 50 MG because of the great performance they delivered.

Although Rick said he sells a lot Daiwa, when I last purchased my last two 50 MG's from him, he said Kyle and himself were changing over to the 50 MG's and he said they were the best reels out there.

Kyle and I really have no affiliation with any reel company and use a varity of stuff for different applications. Some Chronarchs, some Daiwa TDZ, and actually some Quantum. Spinning reels, there is no equal to the Steez product. Funny thing is that when you watch the Bass Tournament shows on TV, all you see those guys using is Quantum and the new Garcia Revo's. Must be the Berkley connection. Rick G.

You have to admit that the new Shimano is not as nice as the last model. I think they are made out of lead. After buying one, I've increased the size of my forearms, biceps, & triceps. The 50 MG is a killer reel and one of my favorites but all of mine have sticky paint which rubs off on a hot day. Daiwa's top shelf reels are better in my opinion. The only drawback is that after a few years, you need servicing and you might as well trash them. Shimano's service is unparalleled.
