What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
I have a 24 volt minn kota 80 lb. thrust and an 18 1/2 foot Ranger. I need to replace my trolling motor batteries. What are the best batteries that last the longest for the money? Thanks in advance.

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
Thanks guys. I guess I have my answer. I will go out and pick some up tomorrow.
Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
Delco Voyager are great
Re: Optima or AGM type!!
Can't go wrong with either of these choices. Main reason being is they can take the beating that they will endure on the water. I've been looking at an AGM through Cabela's that is reasonably priced. If going with Optima, choose the D31M. It has the higher reserve than the D34M. 155 to 120 minutes respectively!!!

Re: Optima or AGM type!!
I use Stowaway 31's and they cost around $65. Optima are good, but they cost $120 and up.
Re: Optima or AGM type!!
The cheaper batteries are fine but Optima's are the best on the market.

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
Trojan batteries are great , a lot of weight but they hold up and dont cost an arm & leg. I'll put them up against any of the others.
Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
Trojans are to big, to heavy, and also not the cheapest battery around. You also have to add water to them. Why go through maintaining batteries when for a few more dollars you get optima's with no water to add ever longer lasting and the charge lasts longer on them. Sorry not bashing other batteries but I have used most of them out on the market and have found that the optima's are by far the best on the market.

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
you may be right, Optimas may be the best battery around. And when you guys have used them as long as I have used Trojans, I may change, but right now I run an EFI. Am still waiting for the new engines to prove them selves, and I have run Trojans forever and never had one let me down, even when I did'nt put water,or when they broke loose and bounced around all day, they still worked. So give this old fart a few more years while you guys test'em then maybe I'll trade up too. There are a lot of good batteries out there that will severe you well depends on price & what you're doing with them
Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
Hey Mr. Rod Martin!!!!
How r u ?
U know who I am don't u???
anyways u old fart!!!
I learned alot from you when i was in the Castmasters of Motown.
one of those things i learned form you,
was your need for speed.
now think about this for a minute okay... how many batteries do u have in your boat???
lets just say u have 4 big heavy Trojan's
. If u were to buy 4 Optima's "at Costco was the cheapest place i found them" plus if any of u guys know Costco. You can return anything to them at anytime with no problems.
anyways the weight of the 4 Opitmas would probably be half of that of the Trojan's . and it was u that told me along time ago, that weight equals Speed . Right???
yep its true. just that with the fact that u never have to put water in the Optimas and worry about acid spills or cracked batteries is awsome to me...
Less time having to worry about the batteries and alot less weight , Means more fishing and higher boat speed as well as better gas milage..
anyways take care Rod and look for me on the Delta passing your slow azz tug boat Champion,
in my Cobra Viper so stay on the left side where all the slow boats r...
...lol ROTFLMAO <----{{{{ Rolling on the floor laughing my azz off..........

Re: Has to be apples to apples...
Not necessarily. In order to be fair, you have to compare similar batteries to have an apples-to-apples comparison. Take the Optima D31M in Coral 96's post and compare that model to its Trojan counterpart, the SCS200. The D31M is supposed to be Optima's most powerful deep cycle marine battery and the SCS200 is Trojan's Group 27 deep cycle marine battery--both are similar in weight and dimensions. The Optima has more cranking amps (does this matter since you're not using it as a starting battery?) while the Trojan has better reserve capacity. The Optima has an edge in being maintenance free. I haven't compared prices but I think the Optima is more expensive.W.C wrote:the weight of the 4 Opitmas would probably be half of that of the Trojan's
So to summarize: a Trojan deep cycle marine battery of equal size and weight as the Optima has less cranking amps but has a higher reserve capacity and amp hours.
Optima D31M
CCA - 900 amps
CA - 1125 amps
Amp Hours - 75
Reserve Capacity - 155 minutes
Weight - 59.8 lbs
Dimensions - 12.8 x 6.5 x 9.4 inches
Trojan SCS200
CCA - 620 amps
CA - 760 amps
Amp Hours - 115
Reserve Capacity - 200 minutes
Weight - 60 lbs
Dimensions - 12.75 x 6.75 x 9.75 inches

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
I know you have a fast viper. Maybe we should take them out and see if those batteries slow me down any.
See you on the water maybe you can teach me how to fish the delta & drive a fast boat when I get one

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
What did I start?????????????I just want to know the best trolling motor batteries.........I guess it is between Optimas, Trojans, or Delco Marines..........I'm leaning towards the Optimas because they are maintenence free.....I'm still not decided.......I have a club TOC in two weeks and I definitely need new batteries for the two dayer in the Delta.........

Re: What are the best batteries for trolling motor?
185vsfrog!
hey buddy .... u did'nt start anything. I'm just having some fun with an old, old, old friend.
But to tell u the truth. i've had both the Trojan and the Optima on my boat.
Both are great batts for your boat .
u cant go wrong with eithere of them. but in my case. Its real hard to get at my batteries in my cobra
, so for me the optimas are a better pick
. I never have to check them for anything othere than to make sure they r still bolted on nice and tight to my boat. They also do for some reason feel alot lighter than the otherbatteries that i've had .
I have 4 in my boat counting my starting batteries. and i've had them for 3 years now with no problems at all..... I'm very happy.
Hey Rod!!! when can u take me out fishing and show this old boy how u always keep catching those double digit fish...
everytime i look u have a Hog to weight inn at the scales
buddy... fess up and show me how u the "Pro" gets them???
and if u want we can take my boat , its
alot faster....lol
Tight line buddy
