USAA Boat Insurance?

Post by fish_food »

Shopping around for a new carrier.

Does anyone have experience using USAA for boat insurance? USAA subs out their watercraft policies through Progressive, and I've read some of the not-so-great experiences with Progressive on this board.

The wife has had a couple painless, expedient automotive claims with USAA and we remain satisfied customers--I'm wondering if the same customer service extends to watercraft issues.

I'm Also a usaa client, and use progressive. Usaa merely refers its custumers to progressive...no other functions exist, no discounts..no nothing. I have not needed to make a claim so I can't comment.

Thanks for clarifying--I didn't know that.

Edited to add:
I just performed a forum search on Progressive and found they actually received pretty decent customer service marks from the members here. There were also more Progressive customers here than I originally thought. My next question is, how much coverage are you guys purchasing under the following categories:

1. Bodily Injury & Property
2. Uninsured/ Underinsured Boaters
3. Medical Payments

I had USAA for my house and truck and they were great, even though I never needed them. But they did get way too expensive. They wouldn't insure my boat, and yes, sent me to Progressive, which was extremely expensive, I thought. Try Charter Lakes, 800-879-2248. They gave me a great deal on liability and even covered Bass Pro Shops as a sponsor. I pay less than $600 for $500k in liability and full coverage on a 07 Skeeter 20i. That is damn good!!

I’ve been a USAA customer since 1979 when the Army made the mistake of making me an officer. I have insured my cars, trucks, bike, and house. I also have my boat insured by them and not progressive. The way I understand it, they refer depends (as in my kids) to progressive. Not to long ago USAA started insuring Senior NCO and I believe they are referred to progressive (but I could be wrong about that).

Any hoo – I have not had to make any claims for my boat but everything else they have been right there for me.

I have used USAA for insuring my autos and house for a long time. I've had two claims for two different houses with them and both times they were TOP NOTCH. I called them recently for a boat quote, and they came in at the same price as 1-800-Bassboat. I'm leaning towards 1-800-bassboat because of the recomendations of people on this forum.

I also have USAA but they do refer out to other watercraft companies. I used Progressive for a while, but they wanted raise my rate 50% two years ago with no claim on my record! I called USAA and was going to go with another company for my boat but they referred me to Foremost. Ask again if you aren't happy with the quote. I directly asked Foremost about my bassboat and fishing in tournaments (teams only) and they actually put me on the line with an adjuster who verified I was covered. I haven't had a claim so can't speak to that but it is easier to deal with a company directly associated with USAA so you don't have to send the declarations in every year with renewal if you have an umbrella policy. Hope this helps.
