i just put vaseline on the hitch ball about 1 time a year.
still looks good after 3 boats and a very long time.

Regular inspection and maintenance is the key.
I think just about any grease that won't drip off in the heat will work. You just have to keep an eye on it, and reapply when the ball begins to look bare.
In the past I've used vaseline, and also the same marine grease I lube my trailer fittings with.

Never tried vasoline but good idea.
I just throw on some white lithium grease or any axle grease i have laying around.

I like to put some marine grease on the coupler in the trailer tongue. The hitchball is exposed. The coupler is not. I grease both.
