Just got back from a couple more days of practice for our upcoming FLW Rayovac Series event at Lake Havasu. The water temps are slowing climbing with temps reaching 56 degrees in the afternoon. Two weeks ago it was only 52-53 degrees so things are looking up. We had nice calm weather on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies and air temperature reaching low 70’s. It was a different story on Wednesday with North winds blowing 20-30 MPH. Fishing seems to be getting tougher than a few weeks ago with much more noticeable boat traffic as anglers are making their way down to start pre fishing as well. The weather here in Arizona calls for warmer temperatures next week with some reach 80’s. The fish should be on the move and as we approach the next full moon will start trigger these fish into pre spawn mode.
We caught a mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth but struggled to catch a limit each day. It is not going to be an easy one for most of us anglers that don’t frequent the lake as much but the locals will be strong again this year as they were last year. Nevertheless, the quality of the fish are really nice right now and the lake is healthier than ever. I did manage to catch a very respectable largemouth weighing 7lbs but those kind of fish are very hard to come by. I was very pleased to catch a quality bass at Lake Havasu like that but gave her a kiss as I released her knowing that I may not see one like that for a while. The highlight of our trip though was a giant striper I caught on a swimbait that was just over 20lbs. So funny because when I hooked that fish it immediately headed for deep water and I chased it down with my trolling motor to catch up to it as it stripped 20lb Sunline off my Daiwa Tatula. We got the battled on Go Pro as the fish went down to 40ft of water in the middle of the lake until I finally got her turned and she came to the surface. We had no net in the boat so I just reached down and wrestled it into the boat. It was fun and man were my juices flowing!!!!
We should have a great turn out at this year’s event and there will be some nice fish weighed in. Right now I’m focused on getting my new Ranger Z521C rigged and wrapped so I can start the break in process before I head out for the tournament. I’m excited to get it all together and wanted to thank my sponsors again for help making this all possible. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that my sister (Rachel) and I will be at the local Wal-Mart at Lake Havasu City on Wednesday Feb. 4th with the Bridgford Foods booth and display so please stop by and show your support and sample some great meat products. Hope to see many of you guys there and good luck to you all. God Bless!!!!!
