DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Lots of talk here at the shop about how folks are bummed out that the daytime events at DVL are over or almost over and its only April? The fishing is just getting good and most of the fish have not even spawned? If anyone thought the bite was good last summer, just wait. This summer it will be crazy good. Are there any Org's left that have permits that can run a Daytime trail? And yes, it is way better during the day than at night. In fact the best bite is from 4pm-10pm and during the night derbys we are sitting in the parking lot while they are chewin! How about evening events instead of night tournaments. You know, get home at a decent hour and be operational the next day? Has to be easier on the TD's also. What do you think DVL faithful?

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
GREAT idea the summer fishing is a blast ther would be multiple 30lb sacks weighed in the summer its just about to go crazy out there and all the derbys are winding down. I agree fishing at night is fun but the fishing is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy better in the daytime/evening maybe some 12 oclock blast off 6oclock weigh blast off again at 8 brian lineahan had 1 derby like this last summer and it was a blast lets do it again hopefully some orgs will look into this.
Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
I think there are only 2 weekends this Summer when there is not a night tournament at DVL. Rick, I think the only problem with a day tourney is that the DFG will not allow 2 permits for the same day. I agree about the day bite being good in the Summer though.

I love the idea of an evening tournament.. Not to early and not to late...

i agree with grover best idea yet. now lets make it happen.
Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
It sucks when my kids wake me up an hour after I get home from a night tournament. The next day after a night tournament is always brutal. I still love them, the night tournaments that is , and I will fish a few this summer. You are right Rick about the evening bite being great. Going through the motions all day in the summer heat just to fish the shadows for thirty minutes before the police force me to put my boat on the trailer is a joke. I have caught a lot of 25lb bags during this short feeding window and it kills me to leave the big ones biting. I would pay 5 times the price of my annual permit to fish a little earlier and later. Bring on the evening tournaments! Just make sure Mitch can't fish them!
Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
With most if not all of the summer permits taken, the only way this can be done is one of the Org's that already has permits needs to take the chance and CHANGE from night to Evening. Lets face it, pretty good fact that one is going to outdraw the others in term of participants, so why not try something unique and different from the norm. I know regular DVL day teams that dont fish nights just because it kills them for the whole weekend. Repeat after me boys and girls "WE WANT TO FISH WHEN THE FISH BITE THE BEST". " WE WANT TO FISH WHEN THE FISH BITE THE BEST". Lets get this done. Rick

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
They all have them. NBW, ABA, A/C, and WON. Last year ABA never even had any due to the fact they drew crummy dates, like 4th of July weekend, So there is going to be plenty of regular night events to keep the night fanatic happy. We are under the 6 hour time frame starting June 15th, so why cant we fish the BEST 6 hours. Rick G.

Hey Rick-
As you know, DVL runs a tight ship. Rick, you could do us all a huge favor by calling the lake and MWD and asking if they will allow us to launch at 6:00 for example while the general public is still on the water. My guess is that DVL will never let us launch until the general public is completely off the water.
Let us know what you find out as I don't have a problem doing something creative. I love mixing it up.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Well they are good enough to let us on BEFORE the public in the regular day events. There has to be a way for the tournament entrants to be differentiated from the public. Special sticker on boat, car in parking lot, ect.... Look at the poll---81% of the folks that have voted have voted for change. I will do some calling. But lets vote folks, before the events get started in June.

Hey Rick-
Just like I thought, It's not going to happen. I spoke to the lake and there are several factors why it won't work. The only way it works is if the orgs take their night permits and make it a normal day tournament.
DVL is not like the old days at Casitas, Perris, etc...They run a tight ship and want everyone off the water before we start. It doesn't seem like rocket science to us, but it is what it is. At DVL, it's entirely up to the decision makers at the MWD and lake.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Kwin, from a DFG standpoint there has to be way better survival rate during day [summer] events than summer night events. Am I wrong? Rick

I dont want this to turn into a rip Quin session, he has no real problem with when we fish. My question is and maybe he can get Mike Guisti on here is that if and Org has a summer weekend permit, can it just get changed to a 6 hour day permit? Opening till noon, or noon till close? Rick

If an org wishes to switch a night permit to a daytime permit they can do so provided they do so 30 days in advance of the scheduled event. It will be open to 6 hrs later or a 6 hour block til' about 2 hrs before close to allow for weigh-in, fish care/release and the boaters to exit when they would have been arriving for a night tournament. (He tournament would also be subjected to a 3 fish bag limit. To answer 619, no they are not your fish as "all fish shall be released alive and in good condition" as is required by the conditions allowing permitted contests. I can send you the conditions that go along with having a permitted tournament though every angler that participates in one should know them already.

÷1 that there are plenty of real issues that need addressing and one of them is not the fisherman who love to fish daily and do all they can to protect the fishery. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and thank the DFG for building DVL. It seems like the rules though are way more extensive at DVL as oppose to any other body of water in the world for a tournament. Why is that?619 wrote:Ouch!! Can the Dfg give some love to poor Hodges...That's where the focus should be. Hodges is hurtin. Regarding all the fish being killed at Hodges, I was informed that someone had spotted a gill net by the 15 bridge recently. That sucks

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
I think everyone needs to stop blaming the messenger.
DFG is not a part of the problem, they are part of the solution.
If anyone has ever attended the tournament date Jamboree in July they would see how DFG is on our side.
DFG is constantly working to craft angler friendly rules that still protect the fishery.
And they do listen to what anglers say, and try to meet our needs. I've attended one of the meetings that DFG held at Anglers for tournament staff, and all they did was talk about how to protect the fish, and to ask how they could make the process work better for the tourney orgs.
As for taking the fish you catch during a DFG permitted event, fishing a permitted event, like driving a car, is privelege, not a right. That's why a permit is required, showing that the tournament organization has DFG's permission to hold an event, and has agreed to abide by their rules and regulations.
If everyone kept the fish after a tournament, it wouldn't take long for DFG to limit tournaments to protect the fishery.
That's their job, first and foremost. That's why tourney orgs. have to file reports after events, listing # of fish caught, dead fish, and # of anglers. It's so DFG can monitor how the fishery is doing, and how the anglers are treating it.
Let's not make it harder on the tournament organizations who put on these events by antagonizing the very people whose cooperation and good will they depend on for permission to hold our events.

Well right now the poll is running 80% want a change. If a permit for a night event entails both weekend days, I just dont see why there cant be a 3-9pm derby and everyone out of there on the same DAY. They are still paying overtime for a regular event, this way it will save a bunch? Rick

Because it's pretty obvious the lake doesn't want to deal with trying to figure out who is in the tournament and who isn't at closing.Rick G wrote:Well right now the poll is running 80% want a change. Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Thats awesome JW. There has to be a way that in this day and age we can come up with a way for the lake staff to figure out who is a derby entrant and who is not. How about a roped off part of the parking lot? Every entrant has to park there and has a special antenna tag or dash permit. And if you think your going to sneak and not get off the lake with the rest of the public, your TOWED or FINED. Maybe the TD takes one of the lake staff in his or the lake patrol boat and makes a pass around the lake at closing? Special tag on the boat? Come on folks. If we can control a robot to collect rocks on mars, this cant be that hard. Rick G.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
I know at the Piru night events, they would put yellow caution tape on the rear light pole or on the trolling motor so they could tell if you were or weren't in the tournie. If you didnt have it on at lake closing the patrol boat just told them to leave.
Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Rick
I am pretty sure that WON BASS will be doing pretty much what you are suggesting with our new Inland Empire Region TD John Wick. You should get together with Billy and John talk about it, and get them set up the way you want them to be with regrads to hours. Maybe we can do a 2 day deal with Anglers Marine ?
As I understand it the night permits are actually two seperate permits covbering both days since we go past midnight, so there are lots of options available. We do need to finish off the events that were cancelled in that region with some of these dates, but it doesn't mean that other things can't be done as well. I agree that for most poeple that fishing the evening would be a fun and relaxing thing do do on a summer evening, and they would probably draw a a good number of boats.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Our night tournament permits are basically one permit for a two day event since the tournaments go past midnight. As kwin said it is up to the orgs to request a change to a day tournament or a two day tournament provided they are off the water before midnight. If an org switched to a Saturday evening that would open Sunday up for a day tournament if someone wanted it. I haven't spoken with the Marina at DVL so I am not sure what could be worked out on the non-tournament and tournament tow vehicle issue or how to tell the boats apart. This conversation with the marina will take a while but I need be able to come up with some solution first. Calling the marina and just hitting them with this cold is not the way to get an answer you want. We need to provide them with a viable plan and present it to them for their consideration. If you have suggestion please let Kwin or I know.

Fish DVL when the bite is the BEST
Get home at a decent time.
Not be burned out for the rest of the weekend.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
I agree with you Rck. When people first got the chance to fish DVL in a night tournament during the summer, going all night sounded so cool. I'm sure some guys still live for it, and there should be some of these events for guys who like it. But it does wipe you out and pretty much take a whole weekend to do it.
I bet there are a lot more guys who would just like to have a evening fishing tournament on their favorite bass lake, on a nice warn summer afternoon and into the evening, and not have to take all weekend to recover from it. We could have a great BBQ as people come in, some good tunes and get some sponsors involved with some raffles, and they could be a lot of fun for everyone involved if we really put some effort into them. I know our guys would be all over putting in some extra effortinto something like this and in working with Rick and others as DVL is no doubt the premier bass lake and in our own backyard.

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
I got a question. Typically at DVL the tournament guys get out earl before the general public arrives, or at a night tournaemnt after they are gone and off the lake. Would a tournament starting in the middle of the day on a Saturday in the middle of summer not have some problems with boats already camped on a lot of the spots, traffic launching, etc.
I realize on a morning weekend tournament the public gets on a little bit later and some of the same problems exist during the day, but in this case the general public would get out first and if it started at 3-4 pm those first couple hours could present some issues. Launching and everything will be different. Maybe it's no big deal ?

Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
Not a big deal Bob. A big part of tournament fishing is being able to adjust when you can't get your spot.
Re: DVL Summer Daytime Tournaments!
For sure you would know, but it made me think of all the post I had read about when BASS was at the Delta and whether guys would give up their spots to a big name. I'm sure your right and deal with this all the time at DVL. Just asking, so thanks for the response !!
