Paypal and eBay

Post by offduty »

I assume you guys know that Paypal and eBay are owned by the same folks. Starting today if you sell on eBay using Paypal you will get an electronic form so the income can be claimed on your taxes. Not sure how this works exactly but I have some high dollar swimbaits for sale and I paid sales tax when I bought them. I do not intend to pay that tax again and eBay will not let me end the auction and there are no bids yet. Just a heads up for you guys. I know this aint directly fishing related but I wanted to let you know. Looks like I will not be using Paypal anymore and probably not eBay either.

offduty,

I've been dealing with these two companies for 7 years now. Here's a tip for you (and anyone else who is interested): Jack up your shipping cost to cover the tax. Neither ebay or Paypal can't get their cut on shipping, just the final sales price. You can't get taxed or charged for shipping charges!!! If the person buys your item, they had better read the everything in the listing, including the shipping cost. Ebay will try to tell you that your shipping is too high for whatever it is you're trying to sell, but they can't do a thing about it! Just think of all of your effort, time, packing materials and most importantly, the cost of freakin' GAS to AND from the post office, UPS or whatever shipping company you use.

STICK IT TO THE MAN AND DON"T LOOK BACK :!: :!: :o

What I have found is guys bitch more when they think the shipping is too high.

What I would suggest is leave shipping cheap, and just start the bidding higher or BIN higher.

I am getting bored of listing/shipping. (I have been buying/selling old 70s/80s BMX bike parts.)

But the only way to play was by sticking on Ebay and Paypal. (I had quit both due to anti gun policies.)

Just about done with em both.

I hear ebay is charging final value fee's on the selling price and the shipping charges. Then Paypal charges you for both so they end up with a solid 20% of the gross sell for doing almost nothing.
I used to sell about $15K worth of crap through them a year but have cut down at least 90% the last couple years.
Ebay is a joke anymore. The used unique items seem to be non existent and the rest is new junk that you can always find cheaper on Amazon.
I rarely visit the site anymore. I hope they crash and burn and do it soon.

I stopped using Ebay a couple of years ago for different reasons.
Crappy customer support
Awful technical support
One month I had about 10 sales they failed to notify me via email on. Then refused to believe it was their system that failed to work. Only way I discovered it was when I got a PO'd customer emailing me asking where his stuff was. I don't blame him for being mad. I was too.

Final straw was when I shut my store down for a few months due to illness. They said I could keep the name and company active at no cost as long as I didn't have any inventory I would not be charged. Wrong. They were hitting me for monthly service charges anyway, with no sales, no inventory, nothing. When I saw that, I closed the site, said FU and stiffed them on their last overcharge to me. Told them to go get the money from their employee who told me it was no charge.
So they have "blocked me" from doing anything until I pay their bill.
They are gonna wait a long time. What good is blocking a customer who will never go back to them in the first place??? Talk about unclear on the concept. :D

Yeah I have done over a thousand transactions on e-bay and I have seen a lot of changes. This change letting the feds into their pocket will be the demise of that business. I suggest that day of you reading this post who has e-bay or paypal stocks that you sell them asap. Yesterday alone they both went down 5 %. In the past e-bay was fun but when they bought paypal it was all about how they could get more money from the seller. The buyer was more protected at the sellers expense. Both e-bay and paypal charge their fees on the total transaction whether its free shipping or 50.00. its off the top brother. I used to be a power seller but when they dis-allowed the checks and M/Os making us use paypal 100% was the beginning of the end. Now with the country going broke the Feds are wanting their cut. Gold today as well as silver are at record Highs and the U. S. Dollar is at a record low this country is going to change in the next 3 years and its not going to be pretty. All the cities with million dollar short falls are cutting this and that and when there is nothing left where are they going to get the money? From us directly. I predict they will double property tax, and I think they have already doubled vehicle registrations. Gas will be 6.00 a gallon and milk and food will double. Get your gardens ready guys, we may need the fruit and veggies we grow to make it. They will raise the % of fed and state taxes out of our paychecks and in 5 years the middle class will be gone. I dont see anything good on the horizon for the stock market but I am sure they will raise the capitol Gains tax as well as the death tax. Its flat out scary what is going on and I dont have any suggestions on how we can protect our selves financially.

I do hope eBay crashes and burns soon. I recently put up some high-end camera gear so that I could buy an updated body, and out of 10 auctions I had issues with three. The worst was from the person who won my auction for my Canon 1DS MkII body - two days after the auction closed I get a request to cancel as he found one outside of eBay for a little less than what he had bid. I refused, and when he received the camera he claimed several outrageous statements including that the camera wouldn't focus (it was crystal clear 16.7MP), had scratches into the body leading to rust (not true, and the body is made of magnesium), and that I agreed to send via USPS but ended up sending UPS (shipping charges were fixed, and I paid more than I charged to ensure it was fully insured).

eBay ended up settling the case in his favor, as they claimed they couldn't validate one way or the other (in spite of me providing the messages, along with high resolution photos taken at Yosemite less than a month before) and pulled the funds from my credit card linked in Paypal and locked them for two weeks before releasing to the buyer. Last straw is that I was charged by Paypal for the transaction fee, but they failed to reverse it.

I could go on about the wonderful emails I've received from eBay written in broken English and the fact that they never bothered to contact me, but the blood pressure is climbing and it is just best to let it go, learn from it and move on.

eBay and Paypal can rot and burn in hell as far as I'm concerned.

Here's some info:

http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/cab/abn/y11/m01/i18/s03

Looks like there's a $20k AND 200 transaction threshold before this is reported/triggerred to the IRS.

For the small guys, it shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck!

I was going to look into Amazon, as they also have an individual seller status which might be a good alternative? I will never use eBay again as a seller, so will be doing some research to see what the viable alternatives are.

Just about everyone I know that used Ebay or PayPal has quit using them or is going to.
I stopped using Ebay about six months ago and closed my PayPal account last week.
They think they've curbed the market but the truth is there are many different alternatives to both, I'd hate to be a stock holder in either one of these companies,
