Tsunami headed our way
A huge tsunami has hit japan in case you are not aware. Those of you who live near the coast need to be aware. It's the largest to ever hit Japan from an 8.9 quake 6 miles of the northeast coast of japan.
It is expected to arrive here in ten hours and may be larger, my not be. It was 13 feet tall in japan and the devastation was horrendous.
Tune to channel 5, they seem to have the best coverage.

NO...not true. There is simply a Tsunami watch...there is nothing yet. As the eve progresses it could change.

I'm listening to several channels and there is a beam headed for Hawaii expected to arrive there at 3:am and the person talking now from a tsunami center says it will be significant. As I said before it may be nothing and it may be more which is essentially saying it's a tsunami wath. The most recent forecast since I posted first has been revised to be headed more toward South America.

First, I really do not believe the Kalifornia coast will be bothered by it. Second, direct it up the canyons( if it does) to my Eagle Lake, it needs mucho water to fill up, as it is at it's lowest point in years.. Bill KGrape Ape wrote:Run away! Run away!!!!!! Warning -> Inundating wave possible -> Full evacuation suggested
Advisory -> Strong currents likely -> Stay away from the shore
Watch -> Danger level not yet known -> Stay alert for more info
The Tsunami Warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion, California to the Oregon-Washington border.
The Tsunami Warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak) to Attu, Alaska.
The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico border to Point Concepcion, California.
The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-Washington border to Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak).
A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea. Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action, or the water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should move immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures.
All residents within the warned area should be alert for instructions broadcast from their local civil authorities. A tsunami has been recorded.
A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

Re: Tsunami headed our way
The real question is how will these several waves of extra water affect the Bass on the delta especially in the franks, mildred, and mandeville area tomarrow (saturday)? Will that water really make it all the way up that far the delta? Will this change or effect the tides in the next 24 hours?
Prayers and thoughts to all involved

Better start believing. I'm in Santa Cruz and it's no joke. Boats are being tossed around the SC harbor right now, some are capsized and a bunch are damaged. Water sucked out 100 meters at Cowells beach. Tide dropped 6' in 5 minutes at the harbor. It's not over yet either. It could last for hours.Bill K wrote:First, I really do not believe the Kalifornia coast will be bothered by it. I live by a philosophy that takes much less typing Scott.
"Prepare fore the worst. Pray for the best."
Guess from reports water has been sucked out of harbors along the coast causing damage to docks and boats.
Surprised you aren't out the picking up clams, Scott.
That's how a bunch of people got killed years back even after being warned by Rangers that the receding water meant tsunami. They ran out and started picking up clams.
Some won't listen no matter what they hear.

It looks like Crescent City is going to have another significant tidal wave. Several years ago they had a pretty bad one.

Santa Cruz harbor is getting WRECKED right now. Boats piled up everywhere, no injury reported yet, but a lot of people live on boats in the harbor, homes will be lost. I hope nobody gets hurt. This is way worse than expected and it's still going strong and getting stronger!

I live down here in Oxnard, at the Oxnard Shores apartments and such....its pretty crazy! if this thing gets huge my stuff is in trouble! So far south of Pt Conception has been ok and no damages other than some boat and dock stuff at the local harbors. Water was sucked out and pushed back up the Ventura River quite a ways but no damage to any houses or such around here.
My place is literally the level of the water, maybe 10ft above! SCARY!

Over $2 mil in damage to Santa Cruz Harbor and Crescent City Harbor I hear got wiped out, but I hear the fisherman up there took their crafts out to sea. I was noticing that Santa Cruz got hit hard after the Chilean Earthquake/Tsunami too. A geologist was explaining last night that the biggest factor in the size of the waves is the depth and formation of the sea floor. Perhaps Santa Cruz has an ideal perfect storm situation there.

I have not seen all the reports, but have only heard of one being swept out to sea.. People do foolish things and many times it costs them dearly. Our coast still has not the damage if you compare it to many other locations, with way more loss of life , property and injury. I guess I'm just more easily impressed. I find it totally amazing that an earthquake whose epicenter was *thousands* of miles away released enough energy to cause the amount of damage it did to the Santa Cruz and Crescent City areas.

Re: Tsunami headed our way
Tsunamis do not really diminish over distance as water is not compressible. For all of us in So Cal I hope you are ready for the big one because it is not a matter of if but of when. Scientists have been saying we are due for a real good one for a while. My father used to run a good sized FD in my home town and got a call from the Geological survey folks who told him a big quake was a high probability soon. It was not long after that call we had the Northridge quake. When the big one does hit it will make the Northridge quake look like Romper room. I am not a doom and gloom kind of guy but my career is to minimize loss so please line up your ducks.

Tsunami Grazes U.S. and Mexico; South America Next
By Dan Levine and Alexandra Valencia
SAN FRANCISCO/QUITO | Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:16pm EST
SAN FRANCISCO/QUITO (Reuters) - Thousands of people fled their homes along the Pacific coast of North and South America on Friday as a tsunami triggered by Japan's massive earthquake reached the region but appeared to spare it from major damage.
The giant wall of water lost much of its energy as it roared thousands of miles (km) across the Pacific Ocean, but many governments took no chances, ordering large-scale evacuations of coastal areas, ports and refineries.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center downgraded the situation in California from a tsunami "warning" to an "advisory," said California Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jordan Scott.
"Things seem to be settling down at the moment," he said.
Scott added some areas were still experiencing surge activity and that residents should stay out of places deemed off limits by emergency personnel.
With the tsunami still poised to strike South America's coastline, Chile evacuated thousands from flood-prone areas and Peru took similar measures, also closing beaches. Chile was hit by a magnitude 8.8 quake and ensuing tsunamis a year ago that killed more than 500 people.
The waves are expected to reach mainland Chile around midnight local time. The government also upgraded the tsunami alert for Chile's remote Easter Island. But an hour after the high waves were due to roll in, there was still no sign of them, the island's governor said.
Earlier in the day, waves crashing ashore were larger than normal in California and Mexico, but only the town of Crescent City, near the California border with Oregon, and Santa Cruz south of San Francisco suffered any real damage.
About 35 boats and most of the harbor docks were damaged in Crescent City, where waves were more than 6 feet, while Santa Cruz sustained about $2 million in damages to docks and vessels, emergency management officials said.
Rescue services were searching for a 25-year-old man who was swept out to sea while standing on a sandbar at the mouth of the Klamath River in California.
Thousands of residents were evacuated along the California coast, including 6,000 near Santa Cruz, before the tsunami made landfall, said Jordan Scott, spokesman for the California Emergency Management Agency.
The port of Brookings-Harbor, the busiest recreation port on the Oregon coast, was largely destroyed, said operations manager Chris Cantwell. "Right now we are in the middle of a big mess," he said. "The surge pulled some (boats) out to sea, about a dozen sank and we've got boats everywhere sitting on top of one another and all over the place."
SIRENS BLARE IN HAWAII
In Hawaii, 3,800 miles from Japan, the main airports on at least three of the major islands -- Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii -- were shut down as a precaution, and the U.S. Navy ordered all warships in Pearl Harbor to remain in port to support rescue missions as needed.
Civil defense sirens blared statewide, starting shortly before 10 p.m. local time, and police with bullhorns urged residents near shore to higher ground.

Now I'm thoroughly confused. Godless liberals believe in Armageddon and we shouldn't yell fire when there's a fire! I'll make a note! The tsunami is not what people are finding humorous.

Japan is really in a mess right now, right now they have 1,700 death and 10,000 missing from one town. There are 54 Nuclear Power Plants and 11 of them are 1 degree from going bad. Two are in real trouble and they are working to shut down and keep from melting down but are have problem with after shocks and more tsunami.
Re: Tsunami headed our way
Okay heres the thing... My sons Science fair project is on Tsunamis, I built a Tsunamis simulator tank out of acrylic, modeled similar to one I saw at the Scripps Institute. We had just finished measuring data for his charts when I sent him to bed and sat down to watch a little TV. Thats when I saw what was going on. If you have never lived through a Hurricane or Tsunami its destruction is like Hell on Earth. And yes I do believe in God. I was not intending to cause injury or insult....ok maybe. Forgive me Father...... but after compiling data and helping my son with his project this was very scary. I have Family in Japan and Hawaii, so this is a very Real Deal to me. No joke. I lived through Hurricanes / Tsunami warnings and wether it was only and advisory or warning is beside the point. To many people take it too lightly, like the guy who got washed away trying to take pictures. Come on......Really. Now if the guy was some kind of Poto journalist and he loved what he did for a living and did it with passion then his death was not in vain. Stupid to some, but he died doing what he lived for. Crying wolf maybe, but there is always going to be some one who is not going to believe.

15 million in Damage to the Santa Cruz Harbor after it was all said and done. The 2 mil was a way early estimate. This is not including personal property, this is damage to the harbor only. Re: Tsunami headed our way
One of my kids has lived in Santa Cruz for the last six years, and he said the damage in the harbor was pretty severe.
His mother called him the morning of the earthquake, and threatened his life if he went surfing that morning. So did his girlfriend, so he skipped his usual morning session. The power of .... estrogen!
I remember being in Crescent City fifteen years after the Alaska earthquake and tsunami of '64, and there was still evidence left down at the harbor. We spent the night parked in a motor home along the breakwater, and both my wife and my mother were a little freaked, because we all remembered the earthquake and the damage there.
I guess the same things that make those places great harbors must contribute to their being vulnerable to tsunamis.
A large portion of the world's population lives near the coastlines, and is exposed to potential tsuname danger, so it seems like these kinds of tragedies are a matter of when, not if.
