Lake Mohave. Any Advice
Lake Mohave. Any Advice
Im fishiing lake mohave in 3 weeks and Wondering what I need to do to catch some fish. Any info would be great thanks.
Re: Lake Mohave. Any Advice
I had my biggest bag there in early March @ 24lbs but any earlier, its usually tough. Deep jigs , dropshot and creature baits in Brown/Purple...It seemed every February my partner Gerry and I would stick a 6 or 7 with either a jig or brown/purple creature bait.
One important aspect is to KEEP MOVING! Find a nice area, dont get bit, then move. Also, I never fish south so this all applies to the North up to the power lines, no further.
That lake is feast or famine!
Good luck!

David has it pretty much right on. Feb is the best time of the year to catch a good fish and a good bag. Hey Dave, what's up? where are you now?
Deejay, love you like a brother, but Mohave is not better for quality than Havasu.....Mohave is my favorite lake because it fishes so tough, and the quality is definitely better than the quantity, but Havasu is the best of the 5 period!! (Powell, Mead, Mohave, Havasu, Martinez). I do like the Bullfrog area of Powell though, that maybe Havasu's challenge for which is better. but you are 100% correct, if you don't know the lake, you can't just go fish it!!
Nevadaboy from Elko huh? I won't give out too much info if you don't post your real name?? I learned from an "old" guy one time, that you can throw any color jig you want on Mohave as long as it's brown an purple. Best advice ever!
Matt B - that is funny, but true!! and it looks like now is a good time!!
One last note: WIND!!! there is no predicting it, just plan on it blowing everyday!! and the big basin to the South of Cottonwood is nasty!!

Re: Lake Mohave. Any Advice
Brent- I'm an hour from the Delta, hour and a half from Clear Lake and only 15 minutes to a Spotted Bass lake with 3-5lbers.
I'm fishing Clear Lake and the Delta every weekend and during the week sometimes to learn these lakes/rivers systems so I can compete again.
So far this winter I've stuck 1-10lber, a 9, and multiple 6's. When I fish Clear Lake a 3lber is nice but is pretty standard as are the fours and fives. It sure is fun backreeling these pigs! I do miss the ultra clear water though!
Hope all is well with you.

yes Eric, I would say that is a perfect name for that place....still a lot of fun to fish when it's on!!
and Deejay, you are correct...but if you put the time in on Havasu that you put on Mohave, you would see those 20+ pound sacks regularly. I wish I had the time myself. I love that place....hell, just give some water, I will fish it
and Dave, wow!! Norther Cal, huh? that is awesome. I have old 8mm movies from when I was a kid and my parents used to vacation up there at Clear Lake. My dad used to troll a black Creme worm with split shot in a little alluminum boat....Hilarious!! His equipment was so ghetto it wasn't even funny, but damn did he catch the fish. How times have changed. I still have his old Mitchell reel and Garcia rod.

Re: Lake Mohave. Any Advice
Up your life insurance and don't expect to catch many fish. On a decent day a team will be lucky to catch 5 let alone a single person, but those 5 will likely be 14+ lbs. As stated before, the lake is extremely windy at all times (much worse than mead) and you can expect to add 10-15mph of wind to whatever the forecast is.
With all of that said... its my favorite lake to fish.... good luck
