I know this is belongs on the auto forum, but nobody looks there...sorry.
My 1985 Toyota 4X4, 22re, EFI, automatic tranny, runs like a champ, but the motor is approaching 300K and barely passes smog now.
I have some cash and need someone trustworthy and afforadable to rebuild my engine in or around the Sacramento area.
I would prefer to have someone do the whole job, but I'm capable of pulling and installing an engine if need be.
Any recomendations from anybody is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Dave T.

Re: Toyota Engine Help
I am a mechanic/shop owner. Started working at the dealership level in 1972. Opened my own shop in 1985. I specialize in Toyota, Lexus and Scion.
300,000 miles is a lot of miles for any brand even a Toyota. When a customer asks this question, my answer is this question.
You are 80 years old and have a bad heart. You get the heart of an 8 year old. My question to you is, How old are you?
Most get it, some don't.
Replacing the engine doesn't do anything for the rest of the truck. It still is worn out just like the 80 year old. It now is broken again, 25 years + old and has 300,000 + miles on it.
There isn't a direct replacement Used Japanese Junk engine. There is a 21R that is sold as a replacement but it is a smaller cc engine. Also these are a very old engine family starting in 1975 as the 20R and ending with the 22RE in 1995 which you have.
If you absolutely have to go through with this I would suggest a re manufactured engine from a Nation Wide company because of the warranty if you do happen to have a problem.
Also, all those pollution control devices are 25 years old and are not made by Toyota anymore (BTDT). When stock runs out and there aren't any, you can't pass smog so it's off to the crusher.
The $5,000 to $7,000 your going to spend for a good job is better spent on a down payment.

I don't know enough, to leave well enough alone.
Re: Toyota Engine Help
If it runs fine then buy a new catalytic converter. Some guys buy a new cat for smog and then take it off after each time they smog it.
Here's some good info to help you pass smog:

Yeah, I understand all that, and good points too.Team Fugowee wrote:I am a mechanic/shop owner. Started working at the dealership level in 1972. Opened my own shop in 1985. I specialize in Toyota, Lexus and Scion.

But nothing can outwheel this machine. I'll go up against any American made four by or newer Toyota any day. The 85 with a 22r EFI, automatic, last year of the front straight axle is one rare and hard working machine. Look on ebay for one. You'll find maybe one, across the whole country.
And if I put a down payment on anything, it will be a new boat. But everything's paid off and I'd like to keep it that way.
But thanks for the advice.

Re: Toyota Engine Help
I have to agree with Team Fugowee. There are many expenses that are going to show their heads as it gets older. Like he said you will probably spend about 6g to do it right. Maybe more!
Give Robert Phulps a call at Bill McAnnally Racing in antelope 676-0010 if you decide to proceed. Tell him you want Leon to do the repairs and I will make sure it is done right.
