Structure scan transducer
Anyone have any suggestions about the best location to mount the transducer?

Toad,
I dont really have one of the structure scans, but just like any other transducer, you need to tell guys more details to get a precise reply. You need to tell us what boat your talking about, what motor and jackplate you got, and what trolling motor you got. all of these affect location and position suggestions. it may work great on the transom for a ranger, but sucks for a skeeter.
Most guys i know that have mounted these, do it on the jack plates of their big motors. stable, left and right positions. Mounting them to the trolling motor can be done, but is more of a pain then it really is worth because you cant keep it steady and get good picture results.
Hope some of that helps.

Re: Structure scan transducer
I have the 987, but I'm not sonar expert.
I do know the unit really only reads at low speeds, 7mph and under, so I read it while I'm entering coves as I pass within 75' or so of the shore, or if I know there is a sunken hump or point I want to look at.
Neither the regular sonar, the SI, or the down scan work at higher speeds.
If you are mounting the unit at the console, the position of the transducer isn't as critical as it would be if you wanted it to read at speed.
My transducer is mounted on the vertical face of the step between my transom and the bottom of my boat. It is not all the way down half even with the lower hull, like my old X15 transducer was mounted. It is mounted just to the drivers side of the lowest rib, or whatever the ridge that runs from front to back on the bottom of the boat is called, about 12" off center.
At low speeds, I doubt that bubble streams from the hull interfering with the signal are much of an issue.
Maybe mounting it lower, like the X15 transducer, would give me higher speed readings, but I don't need that.
As it is, when I'm on plane, I have enough trouble not running into things without having a color screen to distract me.

Re: Structure scan transducer
Thats what i was thinking. Mounting it under the step to keep it safe. But I did read that if you mount it like a skimmer that you could get readings while on plane and I'm just not to sure about that.
Re: Structure scan transducer
Assuming you talking of the LSS-1, can it even be put on a tracker as I don't have a jack plate and putting on the bottom will subject it to being ripped off. Can the LSS-1 be epoxied like a puck to the inside

Call Jordan at Angler's Marine and ask him. They install tons of electronics and transducers.

I just lie in bed and try to figure out how to catch fish at Pyramid.DAKINE198 wrote:Dang Mark, ain't you got nothing better to do at 3AM I should be getting my LSS1 any day now gonna have Jordan install it for me.
You'll love your new graph.
Seeing the same underwater structure that guys who've fished our lakes for their whole lives already know is there is priceless.
Plus actually seeing bait balls and fish is amazing, and cuts way down on prefish searching.
Ask Jordan to add the cartoon channel software for you, so you and your son can watch Sponge Bob.

Toad,
The transdcer can be mounted directly to the step of the transom if you've a Ranger 500 or Z boat. The jack plate is another option as drilling holes into the hull is not required. If you decided to mount the transducer to the step of the transom and need pic's send me a PM.
