Shasta largemouth?

Post by SethB »

I have been fishing Shasta for as long as I can remember. Mostly under my grandpas wing and back then a bass was a bass. I never paid any attention I was just stoked to be catchen fish. That was 20 something years ago. I dont think I've ever caught a largemouth out of Shasta. If I have it was so long ago I cant remember it. My question is there a healthy population of largemoth in there? Are they pretty much just in the pit? If I wanted to target just largemouth would I be wasting my time?

They aren't just in the Jones Valley/Pit area.. There are some places in the McCloud that hold decent populations, but your chances of catching one are slim.

You wouldn't be wasting your time... You'd just be catching a lot of spotted bass while you were trying.

Actually there are largemouth in more areas than you might think. My brother-in-law caught an 11 pounder in O'brian arm some years ago and it was spawned out. The last time the water got high like this and it stayed that way for a couple of years the largemouth population grew quite nicely. I can remember catching as many as 10 in day most were 2 pounders.

I also believe that the full pool and good water reserves in the mountains is a recipe for a sustained high reservoir that will result in improved spawner success to the latest-to-spawn bass in Shasta. Hopefully all the newly inundated habitat will afford adequate hiding locations for spawners and early rearing fry/juveniles alike. IMO there are not a lot of largemouth but you can probably expect to catch one in a weekend or so or hard fishing. My last outing on Shasta on May 1 was interesting since I did run into one largemouth over a weekend of fishing and it would have pushed the double digit mark with out a doubt. So...they are there and there are some good ones.

Have fun and let me know how you do!
