tach problem

Post by fishwithron2 »

Having problem with my tach as all of a sudden it's showing higher RPM than it's actually is. Tach reading from 1000-1500 above normal. Need to replace or problem could be corrected ??

Thanx for any info.

First off if you are not using a digital tach gauge like smart craft or equivalent, I would do so.

I would post question on bassboatcentral.com under the appropriate motor catagory and have it looked into.

Could be a potentially catastrophic failure or just a bad guage. Not worth chancing IMO.

Good luck!

If it is the older analog type - there should be a dail wheel in the back of it that you can adjust for calibration.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Before checking the tach, I would check for a partially spun prop, whether it's a pressed or Flo-torque hub. If the prop is not partially spun, the tach is analog, and was already calibrated before the problem occurred, there shouldn't be a need for re-calibration. What you can do is look at the the position of the calibration slot, whether it's on 4,6 or 8, note it, then simply turn it left or right, then put it back to the original position. These contacts get "stale" after long periods of time. If that doesn't do the trick, then I would venture to guess that the life of the tach has served its purpose.

I had that happen on my Ranger earlier this year. I called Eric Simon at Simon Motorsports (From the lake), and he walked me through checking the ground, to turning the dial on the back of the tach. 5-10mins later, it was business as usual. He said sometimes a little moisture can affect the tach, and with all the rain and such, that might be your problem.
