Bass and Carp
Bass and Carp
it seems like the lakes with a very high population of carp do not have good lmb fishing as compared to others is this my imagination?I also nticed the carp are in shallow waters in larger numbers during the spawn are they eating the eggs or fry?
Re: Bass and Carp
Carp may eat some eggs (not sure really), but they are in the shallows because they also spawn in the spring and most of the way through the summer.

Re: Bass and Carp
Its my opinion that carp do eat other species eggsand fry, We have a koi pond in our yard with some 6 to 8 lb Koi in it. we also have about a dozen or more gold fish tha spawn every yead.
When the koi were 6 inches long we would get a crop of baby gold fish every year even though the koi were snapping them up as fast as they could catch them. They also ate a lot of the eggs.
Now that the Koi are big the glod fish eggs sont stand a chance and there havent been any gold fisf fry for seveal years.
For those who may not know, Koi are just carp bred to be pretty

Re: Bass and Carp
I'm suprised to hear that Koi are omnivorus, But I'm sure they are at least aggressive vegetarians...they consume vast amounts of vegetation, and LMB live in grass more than anything else....
I've had immense trouble fishing for bass in areas where there is a significant carp presence/ spawn.
I read an article once that bass didn't like carp.... and since LMB eat pretty much anything that moves I assumed they preyed on small carp.

Re: Bass and Carp
I've heard alot of reasons for the carp/bass population relationships, I'm sure they are all right to some extent.
Main thing is, if you got alot of carp in a given area, it's gonna be slim on the bass, I've encountered good bass holding spots at a given time, only to find them overrun with carp at a later date (i.e. spawning time).

Re: Bass and Carp
Jeff,
Its cuz you fish the wrong lakes! J/k... carp don’t hurt the fish size... It’s all about the food source and lake turnover. Clear lake and casitas have carp. I think that I am safe saying that lakes that have bass have a very high probability of having carp.

Yea, Dynasty should know. He is the best carp fisherman I know.
Re: Bass and Carp
Bring back the bow tourneys the carp need to go....
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!
Re: Bass and Carp
All fish eat each other's eggs/spawn. Bass eat there own and trout species eat other species eggs, etc. Just part of natures plan for control and demand. As for the carp, they spawn in the srping and are in the same shallows as the bass or other fish that are in the same waters. Again just a fact of nature. Fun fishing the country, each and every week.
Re: Bass and Carp
Hodges has a ton of carp and and no trout plants and the lake record for LMB is over 20lbs.

Re: Bass and Carp
I used to fish carp for two years before fishing for bass. What fun. Caught quite a few 15+ in Clear Lake. The virus 2 years ago killed thousands. Don't see them like I used to.

Re: Bass and Carp
ALL MOTHERLOAD LAKES HAS AN OVER ABUNDANCE OF CARP IN THEM. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CARP WILL EAT AS MANY BASS EGG'S IT CAN SUCK IN A ONE TIME. ALL BASS FISHERMAN DURING THIS TIME OF THE YEAR SHOULD GET'EM A FISHING BOW AND ARROW AND SHOOT SOME CARP WITHOUT HURTING THE POPULATION , JUST THINNING THEM OUT SOME!

Re: Bass and Carp
I have also noticed that it is unlikely thst you will catch Bass during the carp spawn when they are splashing around. I always thought it was the splashing that put them off.
A few years back during a tournament at Clearlake my Am caught a guestimated 12 lb carp on a senko. I dont know if that qualifies a carp as omniverous or not. I rtepeat though that I have seen Koi eat goldfish fry and also remember them going after the mosquitofish that we planted
