thumb tape?

Post by MikeD »

My hands are just trashed after a few days of fishing, wondering what you use to help protect that tender white meat on the inside of the lower half of your thumb when you are lipping fish?

thinking 1" white athletic tape would be easy enough

btw, you probably shouldn't search for "bass thumb" on google, then don't hit the images button on the top of the search results, and then don't look on the 2nd line of images. mmmmm, fishnet

Try some clear fingernail polish. Be sure the thumb is not raw though when you put it on.

Mmmmm, I love Carolee!!!

Use Cornhuskers Lotion, Neosportin, and white tape. i got a bad infection from bass thumb last year, I had to get anti-biotics to cure the infection and swelling.

Those fishnets make other things swell!

Bleeding hands is all part of it LOL When you have rough hands it means you had a good day, when they bleed you had a great day. Every time for days after when your hands hurt and get stiff it will still make you smile when you think back. Keep them clean, fish slime will infect your hands so like already mentioned Neosporin at bed time works great. They will be fine and ready to trash again. LOL!!!

ya, ya whatever, poor me. I appreciate all the sympathy shown...

I do enough self inflicted damage to the body without the need for extra fish teeth damage, that thumb meat is tender stuff and seems to take awhile to heal. Its all these 1 and 2lbr's that are tearing me up, if it was a bag full of toads then I'd say bring it on. I'll try the neosporin next time and see about moving out to deeper water for the bigger fish

I have cut my left forefinger on the hookset too many times to count, and alway put fishing/crazy glue on my finger, especially at the first joint, to protect the skin a little.
It works on all kinds of cuts and stabs, like what happens while fishing.

Just did an image search and they have a 'thumb glove'. Problem solved!

I heard another way to avoid bass thumb is to eat a couple banana's before heading out!

3M company makes some tape used for bandages and physical therapy type stuff. It is a flex tape and stretches with your joints and is somewhat waterproof. I think it is called Koban. Check it out. Alot of SoCal Tuna guys use this stuff long range fishing to keep from getting cut with spetcra and to prevent blisters.

Good luck!......

found the tape, its spelled Coban

apparently there is something called "Vetrap" which is pretty much the same thing as Coban for $2/roll which is supposed to be much cheaper

Re: best thumb tape!

Post by Fishfreq »

But seriously Mike, I've had the same problem. That 1" white tape works best. If I know I'm fishing 6-7 days in a row, I take preventative measures and tape up before every day. I've tried 'em all, and that white 1" waterproof J&J 1st aid tape is the best. One wrap around the base of the thumb does the trick, but at the back of the thumb, I stick the sticky part of the tape against sticky part, because the adhesive sticks best to itself. This will last all day.

That softer flexible stuff doesn't last near as long, and is only good for lower traffic portions of the hand.

I've used that neoprene thumb sleve someone was talkin' about - it had a little velcro that stuck to the bass' teeth and helped you grip the fish. That worked all fine until it stayed on the bass' teeth when I released it-end of experiment!

Now, when you find a fix for the lippin' rash you get on the inside of your palm, LMK, 'cause I haven't found an effective fix, 'xcept catch smaller bass!!!

Dont lip them. I never lip small bass. Just grab them behing the gill plate with your hand over their back. If you grab them firm, they will not flop just as if you lipped them. Just make sure their fins are down so you dont get spined.

I remember Miss Hamilton -- The Librarian in the 6th-8th grade.

......She always wore a rubber thumb cover for stamping books and using it stick in my ear with her fore fingers over my lobe- as she tossed me out of there. -- almost daily as i remember it......

It sported ventalation holes even ........ The Thumb Proctector that is....

Don't forget duct tape...If I'm digging clams on the delta, I tear off a 3 inch section and from there tear off half-inch sections and then start wrapping the fingers...It works great...The smaller sections give you the flexibility...If you need sensitivity, spacing the sections apart might work...

If I use too much tape and overlap the sections, I can't feel the clams...Haven't tried this yet for bassfishing, but in a bind, I believe duct tape will help...

Liquid 'New Skin' doesn't work.

Post by Fishfreq »

Hey L. Hackney,

I've tried New Skin, and several layers provided zero abrasion protection, as a matter of fact, within' 15 minutes and a few bass I could hardly tell that I had applied it. Have you had any luck with it?

I guess I could have applied 8 or 10 layers to build it up, but that might have taken 20 minutes, and probably would have still come right off.

I've tried all the liquid stuff and nothing works. The only liquid I use is Crazy Glue Gel or Liquid Bandage, applied directly to an open wound, seals it up for good. Like suchers in a bottle. You can cut your thumb and in 10 minutes be casting a baitcaster pain and blood-free. Now that's awesome stuff!

Re: bass thumb came off!

That slip-on neoprene thumb protector was the funniest thing I've tried! Litterally 3-4 bass into my trial I went to release a bass and the velcro that's supposed to stick to bass teeth-did exactly that when I released a fish! I hope he could get it out of his mouth down there!

Still, the white 1" waterproof J&J First Aid is the only thing that lasts all day. I don't know what you guys use, but I believe I'm the only person that I've ever seen wearing that stupid white tape on my thumbs ever! It works!

Mike, seriously, you don't need to buy any expensive Coban or anything like that. Just use the white 1" J&J waterproof first aid tape. I've been using it for years and it does something all the other stuff doesn't do: it stays on your thumb all day long, even if you're catching tons of fish and you don't have to mess with it.

Try it.
