Is there any good fishing In modesto area??

Post by Nor Cal Bassman »

Whats up guys, Im new to the board, But Iv been on western bass for a long time. Any ways, Im a shore fisherman and I have fished turlock and modesto res. a hand full of times and cant seem to catch any bass (only the lil guys 1/2 pound or smaller!). Are there any other lakes that are good. I dont have a boat.. so I know that makes it harder!!

Thanks fellas.

McClure has some decent shore fishing around the marina. Nothing big but plenty of spotted bass to pull your srting.

I've been in your shoes for years until this year. Finally bought a boat on this site. I'd go to McClure or Eastman personally. Go to Barrets cove. Either at the Marina area or go to the boat dock. Theres some structure between the Marina and the regular boat dock. Mostly right under the camp sites and the bathrooms by the boat docks. The water levels are really low so the structure is getting less and less because its now on top of the shore line.
Easman at the damn is good, or atleast when there was water. Its at 11% capacity right now so i dont know what it looks like at this point. Or drive to the closer boat dock by the entrance and hike north, lots of wood and rock structure over there before the no fishing area. If you have access to a samll boat you can try shaffer bridge at merced river outside of winton to sante fe bridge in cressey. Some good holes back there if you know where to look and are willing to take a chance. Use google earth. Good luck.

Thanks guys,

Ive been to Barrets cove before, I went to a bbq at the little oasis they have there. I tossed a sinko wacky rig and cought a few lil guys at the "HARD DOCK cafe" marina. Only spent like a hour there and one of the rangers kicked me out! I didnt go around the hill there, but they told me the bass fishing was better over there.

any body else got any suggestions??

Man... I need a boat!

One other suggestion, buy a float tube or kick boat. There are plenty or good places to fish in the area that can't really be fished from shore but if you have a float tube or kick boat you can get at those fish. send me a PM and I will clue you in.

Try the pond off of Orange Blossom Rd. Part of the River Park system on the Stanislaus. Also, like one of the other posts said, the Cressy Bridge. There is a dredged area that holds lots of fish. One other spot that is great in the fall is Pedro. If you take a left before the bridge that crosses Mocasin Creek you can park for free and walk to the water. Might be a little hike now but great place with easy access. You can also turn on Grizzly Rd and get access to the other side of Mocasin, a little tougher to fish, but expands the area. The property owners on the Grizzly side only own the land to the lake level, so anyone can fish. Hope this helps.
