sunglasses for larger face/nose bridge?

Post by MikeD »

trying to find a pair of polarized sun glasses for my big jug head has been tough, still not happy with what I'm wearing so I thought I'd float this out to see if any of you other jug heads might have a solution.

my problem is I end up with a big gap between the bottom of each lens and the top of my cheek on pretty much all the glasses I've tried - causes a lot of glare to get thru.

Right now I'm wearing a pair of Solor Comfort wrap arounds, but I don't end up with much "raccoon eye" effect which causes me some worry about the amount of sun that is making it thru. The polarization is ok on the Solar Comforts but there has to be something better

The list of manufacturers that I've tried that have not worked: Costa, Maui Jim, Eye Surrender, Aruba

Tried on a few Solar Bats without luck, but don't think I've gone thru the entire line

Going to retry the Maui Jim Canoes this week after reading Dans post

Try the Hardtop, by Native Eyewear. Lightweight, and comes with interchangeable lenses.

BrothA Mike- The Canoes will not dissapoint you at all .... And I imagine that they will fit you just perfectly in what you are looking for. We both have perdy much the same face and head .... I just keep cutting all my grey hair off.

I was actually a little worried about them at first because they actually rest/seal on my cheek bones - and I could see a little of the bottom frame sitting on my face. It just took a little time in wearing them and I never even notice it anymore. It is like breaking in a new baseball glove from an older model.. and reforming it to your hand.

One other thing I have noticed in the heat walking into cool area (shop) - They fit so good and "are sealed" on the bottoms and bridge - that they do not vent or breath like my other pair of MJ Stingrays in a smaller frame and can get some condensation to start on the insides.

Make sure you get to look thru the Green lenses - If they only have the Gray and HCL - ask them to order a pair for you to try on and look through in the Green. ~~ An amazing lense !!

Good Luck Bro !

I know how you feel. I use Bolle which is now owned by Bushnell. The sunglasses are light and comfortable. Go to www.bolle.com and check it out. I have used all of the other sunglasses you named and will stick with Bolle from now on. If I see you on the motherlode lakes hit me up and you can try mine out, I carry a few with me. Mike

MikeD,

I have a problem with finding glasses that are wide enough to fit on my big dome. Just had to return a pair of Costa Del Mars that I bought online cause they wouldn't fit.

So far I've found three frames that will fit me.

Ray Ban 4021

Revo 3056, but discontinued. There are some available on EBay. Don't bother with any of the new styles from Revo though, I tried 12 of them the other day and none fit.

Maui Jim Banyans - New style, vented frames to reduce fogging. This is the pair I'm planning on purchasing next. These also have adjustable nose pads, which is a new thing for the Maui Jims.

I've also liked the Maui Jim Kanaha - but the Banyans fit better and let less light in (from the sides) than anything else I've tried.

If you want to go cheap, take a look at Walgreens glasses, I've had some luck with those sizes, and since they're so cheap you can call them 'disposable'.

Costa del mar "Pescador" fit my big dome and they are light and have good polarization as well. They also look good. If they fit my dome they will fit anyone's mug

Mike Ive seen your face. Try a windshield off a 86 oldsmobile. You can leave on the wipers, visors, and mirror. You can use the washer fluid if you get tired of licking windows like I did.

Actually go to a big 5 and check out there bolle polorized. There 39 bucks and really good.

I Too have an oversized melon and have tried them all. I honestly feel you will thank me if you go to sunglass hut and buy a pair of Arnette's. The style you want is the RAGE "XL". Make sure they are the "XL'S" cuz they make 2 diff. sizes. They come in Polarized and work great and fit the biggest of noggins comfortably.

Costa makes so many models I can't keep track of them. The pro shops usally only carry top sellers. Hit a Costa booth at a sport show or talk with a dealer and meet up with the Costa rep. He carries a lot of samples. The best glass going is the 580 lens by Costa.

You can go to Bass Pro Shops and try on the entire Costa line, I personally like the Blackfin.

stopped by BassPro on the way home and spent more than a few minutes at the sunglasses counter, the girls there were very patient.

I tried on all the costas - again - and still nothing fit. Worked with the Costa rep at the ISE show 1.5 yrs ago and tried them all on in Sac at the time without success. Seems that my nose bridge is wider than most which in turn makes the glasses ride higher on my bridge causing them to have gaps between cheek and lens.

they didnt have the Kaenon line, nor did they have the Native Eyewear. The Maui Jim Canoes suffered from "riding high" as well. I tried the Oakely Radars but they didn't fit too well either. Tried all the Solar Bats without luck as well.

In the end I did make a purchase, I bought the Maui Jim Banyans and took Dan's advice on the green lens color. We took them outside and looked into the water by the front door, compared the dark lens and the green. The green really did penetrate the water better for me, YMMV. Think the adjustable nose bridge helps for my face shape. Wore them home and they worked well, but that green is really really light - not used to it after all the dark shading that I expect from sunglasses. We will see how it goes with the shading, the fit is pretty good though

A really big thanks to everybody who chimed in - *all* the info was really helpful, and hopefully it will help the next jug head who comes along with the same problem navigate the maze of products out there.

Congrats BrothA Mike !

That green stuff iz da Snitz !! 8) ...Just like a new baseball glove being broken in - You will more than appreciate it and grow into them quickly... And even more-so with your time on the water. I still wear my MJ HCL's now at work. - and it is an adjustment putting those back on even for me now as I wear my Greens all the time I am outside of work.

... Wish I could afford another pair of MJ's in Green to not worry about scratches and such.

One suggestion though -- Get some croakies for those light frames. ... One turn sideways while on pad .... with a back/sideways glance to check postition before turning ... and the wind gets behind them ~~ They will end up just like my wifes MJ's ~~ in the bottom of the False River !! Just like when DeltaLuke "borrowed" Kris's pair for one of his DTT tourneys. .... With out her knowing even prior to on my Okie-Dokey for DeltaLuke to use them. They did not last 4 minuets from their blast off.

Good gawd -- The wife still rants about loosing those glasses to this day even as they were perfect for her.

BTW Bro .... What the heck is ""YMMV" :?:
