STRUCTURESCAN SONAR TROLLING MOTOR MOUNTING BRACKET

Post by Morgan »

Ken, I am planning on purchasing a new HDS with structurescan for the bow. I have a Maxxum Minnkota 101 trolling motor that has a built in transducer that sticks out from the motor. There isn't a picture of the bracket on the Lowrance site. You mentioned in a previous post about getting a STRUCTURESCAN™ SONAR TROLLING MOTOR MOUNTING BRACKET. Will that bracket work with my trolling motor? Will that built in transducer on the troll motor work ok as the downscan or do I need to try and use the one that comes with the new HDS?
I see that Transducer Shield & Saver also makes one, but I think looking at their picture, it wouldn't work in my application. Thoughts?

Thanks, Morgan

Transducer Shield makes them for every application. I got one on my Maxxum. They had me take a couple of quick measurements to verify. The product was very well build.

Lowrance sells one that I use. They are changing the old LEI Extras website to a new site to purchase these products from. Call Lowrance at 1-800-324-1356 to get information on the Structure Scan trolling motor mount.

The universal transducer in the trolling motor is for the traditional sonar only. To view side or down view of Structure Scan you will need the Structure Scan transducer that comes with an LSS-1.

I meant for sonar. Is it the best for the new HDS?

Thx Morgan

I am sure Ken will be by soon. But the universal transducer just doesn't cut it for the HDS in my opinion. It will only work for the conventional view and will not work at all for the structure scan views (both down and side).

Absolutely use the new transducer and the LSS transducer. The LSS is the one that gives you the structure scan high def views of down and side. At various times you will end up using all three of the views.

Thanks, Someone had told me he had installed a different transducer on his LCX than the one that is built in, and it made a big difference, but I didn't know if he didn't have his settings set right as I could see my bait on the bottom with the same setup.

The universal transducer is just that, universal. It will get you by with any sonar unit, but the ducer that is designed for a particular head unit will always be the best choice. Lowrance has devoted alot of time and money to produce the best transducer for the HDS units over the last year or so. I never buy my trolling motors with universal ducers. I ALWAYS use the hose clamp and install the transducer that comes with my Lowrance units.

Since the February 2012 post about universal transducers, I found out that Minn Kota doesn't install a ground wire on the Fortrex if there is not a universal ducer built into the motor. One can be installed but this means taking it to a shop and more dollars. It may be cost effective to get a Fortrex with the universal ducer to get the ground wire and have a spare ducer. I still recommend using a Lowrance transducer first. Either a skimmer or a puck, it doesn't matter since they are exactly the same on the inside. The outside housing is the only difference.

The Structure Scan ducer mount I was referring to months ago in this thread was in reference to the LSS-1. This ducer is short and will fit on a trolling motor along with a traditional broadband ducer quite well. The LSS-2 ducer is longer and you will find it difficult to mount it and a puck on a trolling motor.
