Spun Prop Hub?

Post by jsc11700 »

I was wondering if it is still possible to get on plane with a spun prop hub? I am able to get on plane even though it is much more difficult than normal and once i get trimmed properly it feels like the prop slips for short instances. This causes the engine to rev shortly before the prop grabs again. Could this be a spun prop or a compression problem?

Sounds like an engine problem.

With a spun hub The prop shaft itself would spin inside the hub and not allow the prop to bite at all.

I'd take it to your mechanic and have it looked at.

i,ve spun my prop twice over the years . wasn't able to get on plane. i now carry an extra prop hub. they are easy to replace. takes about 15 minures ..take prop off replace hub and put back on .. maybe you have mono or braid around your prop.. ?? if you can get on plane and it is the hub..it will probably go completly out when you are 15 miles away from the ramp ... murphys law.. luckily both times i spun my prop i was real close to the ramp .. bob g

Unless this is the same prop you have been using, it sounds more like cavitation, however your prop hub could be slipping, but not completly spun free and in need of repair/replacement. Bill K :)

This sounds like it may be the case. I hit a floating piece of debri at shasta a couple months ago and ever since then I have had this problem. I am going to send it to Phil's and see what they think.

both times i spun my prop i could go at idle speed..it was only when i applied more tourqe.. i guess all spun props act different. i would pull the prop and check the hub before taking to mechanic. if hub is spun its easy and cheap to fix. no sense getting a mechanics bill if you don't need to ??

The question I haven't seen asked is what type of hub do you have? Is it a pressed rubber hub or a Mercury Flo-Torq? If it's a pressed hub, you will have to have Phil's or another prop shop press in a new one. If it is a Flo-Torq, you can change the nylon sleeve out and see if it corrects the issue. I run a solid hub Flo-Torq with my props, and can guarantee if I ever spin a hub, there will be major damage involved.

If you have the boat on the trailer put it in gear so it locks the drive shaft and try to turn the prop by hand. If its spun you should be able to get it to spin like that and have your answer.

I believe it is a pressed hub. I tried putting my motor in gear and spinning it by hand, and it will spin one way but not the other. So I guess now I am back to square one. I am going to take it out this weekend and check RPM's and all that. My next question I guess is what could be causing my prop to cavitate on plane all of a sudden when it hasn't in the past?

i would say that your problem is cavatation,it sounds like when you hit the debris you tweeked a blade on the prop. phils is the place to send it.

I have this problem on a prop that I took off a couple years ago.. I still have it, but Chris at Phil's basically told me that my prop was so thin, and well used, that it didn't have any more tweaks left in it.. so... She's retired, and I have a new one..

So.. how old of a prop is it? You can also bend the blades by hopping a big wake and slapping back down, so ask yourself if it's either.
