Spool slippage on the hookset...
...using baitcasting reels, what typically causes the spool to slip when setting the hook on a fish? I've noticed with the new Curado 101D I have that from time to time when I rear back and set the hook, the spool slips reducing the effectiveness of my hookset. I believe the drag is set properly, perhaps I'm just trying to hammer the hook home a bit too hard I dunno.....I don't seem to have the same issue with my Daiwa Viento reels....

Re: Spool slippage on the hookset...
Yeah I been using my thumb too but a time or two I accidentially hit the spool release button.....damn....not only do I miss the fish...but I get a nice backlash to screw with as a bonus.
But I think you're right I need to use a swifter less physical hookset.

Re: quick questions
Are you using braided line? And do you have mono backing?
If it's braid, sometimes it can slip on the spool if you don't use a mono backing.

Re: Spool slippage on the hookset...
There can be a little to much grease on the drag washer which is between the drive gear and the drive gear washer. And like the other person use mono backing on braid,And if all else fails check the idler gear.

Re: quick questions
Photon, not using braid, fluro-carbon 20-25# test.
I will check the items suggested, thanks.

Re: quick questions
If all else fails call shimano and speak with patrick. He will help you out very standup guy for a big company.I would swear he owned it and wanted to back his product.
Re: quick questions
Dump the old green curados and go with the new ones 200 DHSV. They are pretty awesome. You can hammer the drag and have no slipping problems.

I think Photon asked a good question....
The first thing we need to clarify is, are you talking about your drag slipping ? Or the line (as a whole) spinning on the spool ? .... or are you sure which of these it is ?
Check this closely the next time your out. I can then tell you several things to prevent the latter. If I miss your reply, please shoot me an e-mail.
Peace,
Fish

Re: I think Photon asked a good question....
Thanks Chris the line does not slip on the spool, moreso the drag slips just enough to mess up the hookset. If I tighten the drag down further the slippage disappears, but then I run the risk of hooking a big one (yeah right!) and having the drag tightened down too far...and I hate messing with the drag once hooked up.
I'm thinking I'm just being a bit too overzealous on the hookset given my preferred drag setting for the line I'm using.

Re: Spool slippage on the hookset...
I don't think to much grease on the fiber drag washer will cause it to slip, but... if excessive drag grease is applied to the drag washer it will get on the anti-reverse bearing causing it to slip. Take out the anti-reverse bearing, wipe it down inside with a pipe cleaner, and re-install. The idle gears job is to turn the line pawl worm gear and will not cause the reel to slip.
Quantum has added a positive anti-reverse device along with the anti-reverse bearing to prevent this.

Do a carbontex upgrade
I upgraded all my Curados to a carbon fiber drag waser called carbonex, no problems anymore.
I did like the sound of that break though on good hook sets

This guy on coastside has a step by step on how to tweakum up.
I gave my rigs to him to clean and upgrade.

Concerning reels, I've been playing with the Quantum Cabo CBC-20PT for this type of applications ... it does not have a thumb bar, but a spool engagement button off to the side. It's made for salt water applications and is built like a tank.
