i use spinning for light plastic fishing....split shot and 4in

i cant pitch or flip anything that light as well as having distance between the weight and worm (8inches or so)

i can cast same places as baitcaster but needs a hi arc. since the profile is small, the splash is small as well

for other baits....reaction,etc nothing compares to a baitcaster

Jigs,

I know that Leroy Bertolero used to use a spinning rod for just about all his applications except for Flippin.
The success he has had in his long outstanding career should tell ya something about a spinning rods versatility. :) :)

I use a spinning rod for dropshot, dartheads, small jigs (like bitsy-bug sizes) and sometimes ripping, soft jerkbaits, and light carolina rigs. I dont know why a spinning rod would want to be used for fishing things like spinnerbaits, frogs, spooks, etc. To me that would just be extremely awkward and your control wouldnt be as good.

Mark, I am pretty sure he hasn't changed. I remember seeing him when I fish as an AAA back in the day and going wow, only spinning rods!

It can be done but not sure it is always the best for certain situations but then again he has done well with them!

I like spinngrods for skipping or kinda sling shotin where you load the rod up and shoot the bait into hard to reach places.I also use them on small topwaters.

I think i only own one over here!!!
And to boot, my stradic reel broke on me! So that makes me one evergreen spinning rod and no spinning reel, CRAP.

Although in my new rod order I am getting there new spinning rod, guess i have to find a reel for it but it will probably never get used, well maybe for a small baby jig..... hehe

When I first really got into bass fishing, I used a Mitchell 300 and a Mitchell 400 for everything I did..I fished that way for about six years..I still believe there isn't anything you can do with a baitcaster that you can't do with a spinning reel..But there are some things that you can do with spinning gear you cannot do with baitcasters..By the way I now use mostly baitcasters..

I fish black bass exclusively with a spinning rod. I am not a pro, hell I'm not even an amateur, just your average guy who likes to fish.

In my case I fish the spinning rod for a few reason that probably won't apply to almost anyone else here, I fish out of a kayak so I am limited to the number of rods I can carry at any given time and the spinning rod to me is more versatile to all situations I might find while out there fishing.

Mostly I fish in the Delta and I use braided line, but I am thinking about adding another spool for the spinning rod using mono so I would have a sinking line as well without the additional space requirement for another rod and reel. About the only thing I don't fish much is the jig - I just don't have any confidence in it. Also the spinning rod can wear you out fishing anything you want retrieved really fast, but it can be done.

Agreed the spooks can be a bit hard to control with the spinning rod but I haven't had any real issue frog fishing with them.

Leroy Bertelero only uses spinning rods

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

I have developed rotator cuff problems in my right shoulder and am able to fish much with much less pain with spinning gear. I dont know how to explain that but holding the rod in my right hand seems to put less stress on the shoulder than cranking the handle

Leroy now has a spinning flipping stick

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

I also have one that he got for me. Lamiglass makes them for Leroy. It is a great rod for flipping or pitching jigs

I have 4 spinning outfits that I use quite a bit. (Not as much as my baitcasters but enough....)

All 4 have Shimano Symtre reels paired with Lamiglas spinning rods.

1 heavy outfit, 1 med/heavy and 2 light finess setups.

I'll fish these with drop shot, small cranks and lipless baits (LV 100) and spinnerbaits, small t and c rigged worms and small jigs, hell just about anything....

My best fish to date at Clear Lake (7+) was taken on the heavy outfit using a Terminator T1 spinnerbait.

I did an article for Bass West USA about a year ago about spinning vs baitcasting. It should be in the archives. I started my fishing career with spinning only. I thought Tom Mann Sr, Leroy B., and I were the only ones. My largest bass, over 14 lbs, was caught on a spinning outfit. Now I only use spinning for my clients, and dropshotting and split-shotting. I dropshott at Clear Lake with a heavy duty spinning rod - Lommis 843 and a Shimano 4000, with 12 lb test. Spinning allowed the bait to go straight down the pilings at Clear Lake with no line resistance as in a baitcasting reel. After some 9 lb plus bass landed drop-shotting under docks, I leave my toy drop-shot rigs at home!

I MOSTLY ASKED THIS QUESTION , BECAUSE MY WRIST IS NOT AS STRONG AS IT USED TO BE, AND IT IS GETTING HARDER TO SET UP/SET THE HOOK ON A CASTING JIG ROD AND WORM ROD THAN IT USED TO BE...IT SEEMS EASIER TO HOLD ONTO A SPIN ROD SETUP AND SET THE HOOK. I AGREE THAT I DO NOT HAVE THE FISH CONTROL OR DRAG SYSTEM THAT I HAVE ON A CASTING ROD, BUT I SEEM TO BE ABLE TO HOLD ONTO THE ROD EASIER ON THE HOOK SET.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT

Jigs and mr conlow i have worked with many patients with fishing injuries. if you 2 would like some input at therapy and how to help minimize fishing injury and fatigue please feel free to pm me and i will be happy to talk to you fellas. i work for a national orthopedic group and have had wrist hip and shoulder probs myself in the past. main reason is that baitcasters are not as ergonomically designed but you can change that by modifications anyhow pm if interested.
