Spider wire vs. Power pro

Post by Dan Stahlman »

I have always used Spider wire and love it. A friend told me to try out the Power pro 12-50 as it was a little cheaper. Bought two spools to start with. Fishing Clear Lake this weekend with my Daughter (it was a zoo) was my first opportunity to try it. Used the Polomar knot which is what I have alway used on the SW. Had two jig hung up in the rocks and with a very slight tug the line broke at the knot. In another instant, my daughter had a massive hit on her crank bait and again the line broke at the knot. Needless to say I was pretty disgusted with it. Has anybody else experienced this happening to them? Is this the preferred knot to uses with it? Should I just go back to the Spider Wire?

Dan, I've used SW and had problems with the same knot and they always seemed to come undone. I started using PP this year and have had no problem with it. I use a double palomar and then throw two half hitches on it and I have no problems.

I know that I have had a few problems over the years using Spiderwire, and Power Pro. The Spiderwire Stealth worked better than the original, and the Power Pro was better than the Wire. I would break the line here or there with both, more so with the Wire, but not often enough to stop using it. Recently, I have started using Sufix braid, which is hands down, the best braided line I have used. The line stays round, has a high not strength, and casts well. I have also heard that Stren Braid is good too.

Just my 2 cents worth :P

I had problem with the SW breaking so I quit using it along time ago.

I used to use the Power Pro and it was ok but I started using the Daiwa Samuari and that stuff is awesome. Nothing compares to it.

It's tough when you get heart broken because of line but it happens.

I was a Power Pro user until I found sufix... It holds with regular knots, its more round then all other braided lines, it doesn't turn white (no Wax Coating) it is strong as snot and good stuff.

Also, Sufix has 2 more strands than its competitors for the same line strength For example if Power Pro uses 6 strands of line braided together to make 50 lb test... well, sufix uses 8 strands... That is why it is more round.

If you are looking for a new braid give it a try... you will like it!

Had the same question/problem last year.

My line was actually slipping through the knot and not breaking as I thought.

Started tying the San Diego knot and a double palomar and have'nt had a slip since.

That will keep you going until you can try one of these other lines that just have to0 be the best  !!!
I had to come back...I know...

Hello Dan. I've been using nothing but braid for close to 15 years now. I've used all the name brands, and some lesser known ones also.

I used to use Spiderwire for several years, and it worked well... but was just too expensive.

I tried a spool of Power Pro once, and had basically the same experience that you did.... although admittedly, that spool was given to me by a rep, and it looked like it had been though a war.... not to mention, I do hear a lot of good things about it.... so, I think "we" probably just got bad spools.

Anyway, about 5 years ago I started using TUF-Line Plus, by Western Filament, and I just loved it. Really good value too. So after a couple years of buying it, I decided to start bugging them for a sponsorship.... and it worked ! :-)

I never have any problems with my TUF Line, and knots. I use a palomar to attach my hooks. Usually an improved clinch to attach swimbaits..... oh but wait..... the only knot my braid ever sees is a bloodknot to attach my mono or fluorocarbon leader. It never slips or breaks, so its all good.

Hey Tom.....

You mentioned braided line fading. TUF Line makes a bunch of line that won't ever fade at all.... In fact, with use, it might even get a little darker ! Oh.... It's white :-) .....and I love it ! Very easy to for me to see on my end. A big plus in watching your line for light, slack line bites, and also for line control in general. Visibility at the fishes end is of no concern, as I always use a regular mono or fluorocarbon leader anyway.

As for flatness.... If this really bothers a guy, he can just use TUF Line XP, which is very round also. But after using TUF Plus for years (the 30 lb test and down, does flatten... 50lb and up is round) I never did find any negative problems asociated with this.

Nowadays, I have settled on TUF Plus for 30 and down, because it is available in white, which I prefer. And TUF XP for 50 lb in moss green for my heavier swimbait gear.

Peace,

I had the same problem with SW but I too switched to Sufix for all my braid and love it. Haven't had a problem yet. I also found that the other brands tend to get flat and can slip out of o-rings and some hook eyes, and my Sufix hasn't gotten flat on me yet.
