Hey guys,
I want to get a good quality shad dipping net before the shad start surfacing again here in So- Cal. Anyone know where I can get one in or around the Los Angeles, Castaic area? Distance and price aren't really an issue just want to get a good size along with quality net. Any place online would be awesome too. Thanks and appreciate it!

You can always make one your self, The ones the guys seem to like the most are on swimming pool poles. A little ingenuity goes a long way. I see guys making them for $45.00 - $60.00 and then charging $175.00- $250.00 when the shad starts running.
I have a few that I have made for about $40.00. Get some 5/16 stainless rod and bend it to the hoop shape you want and have it welded to a short pice of pole that a swimming pool pole will slide in to. Get a swimming pool pole and some black electricians tape or flat black tape. Then all you need is to drill the holes for the pins in the small piece of pole that has the net hoop attached to it. Paint or tape it up and put the net on. Either thread the net on to a light gauge wire hoop and tie wrap that to the bigger hoop. Or you can use fishing line and lace the net to the big hoop.
I used to get frustrated seeing guys getting raked over the coals for these nets and refused to ever buy one that way so I have made a few.

Re: Shad Nets
The one thing that set really good nets apart from cheap ones, aside from the netting itself, is a double rim, which allows the netting to be attached to the inner ring, while the outer ring acts like a bumper, protecting the net attachments from being damaged when you dip near rocks or brush.
If you're going to make your own, look up some of the better nets online, so you can see what I'm talking about.

My youngest brother is coming down from Big Bear to visit for his spring break and I wanna get him on some fish using both artificials and the shad.
He should have a blast!

Memphis Net and Twine is a great place to get custom netting for your net...Memphisnet.com is the website...You can always cut a throw net away from its lead and do it that way too...I used plastic slip ties to attach netting to ring instead of tying...As for the ring, we used welded aluminum piping, looks to be about 5/8 inch to 3/4 inch dia...I believe it is solid...For the pole we used conduit because a lot of pressure would be used on the down press and I would torque it on a tub to get the net up from say 10ft. depth or so...Our handles were 12-14ft. long...Ring was 3 ft. dia...If the conduit bent, I would just bend it back using the boat trailer...Having some parabolic bend in the handle would always make the net handle better in our hands...Halogen lights worked the best for moving the shad at night...Sugar Cut was our favorite slough and Mossdale had shad that looked like they were on steroids...If one goes that way at night, make sure you bring "Betsy" with you for safety...
