Scents on swimbaits?

Does everyone use scent on their SBs? What scent? Craw? Garlic?

Also, do you think soft baits can become 'tainted' from sitting too long or not keeping them clean, etc?


I've been chucking mine around, but nothing.... what gives?

I would say ...YES... to useing scent on your swimbaits. Depends on what kind of baitfish you are trying to represent. If it is the trout try the Rainbow Trout gell from Pro-Cure. If it is any other baitfish try the Shad gell from Pro-Cure. But for sure add scent.

Scent also lubes the bait so the fish can suck it in better. Pro Cure trout is what I use for trout baits.

Some swim baits smell like PVC glue. I dont think scent will do you any good since it is a reaction bait. They either eat it or dont, if they have time to sniff it they are not commited to eating it IMO. Plus the scent will melt your bait to your plano boxes and you will ruin them, like I did.

Personally, I don't use the stuff very often. I'm sure it could help in certain situations but I'm too lazy and it doesn't seem to matter that much.

I use scent on everything....it is more to mask what ever I have touched (sunscreen especially).....most if not all scents are made from some sort of petroleum...so yes, it will discolor or melt to other plastics.....Carolina Lunker Sauce is the only scent that isn't petroleum based, and will not damage the plastic or change the color....they don't have a trout "flavor", but the two shad types are excellent....this is not a sponsor plug, it is fact....

Brent I will totally agree with your statement, except I personally like the garlic flavor, and lunker sauce has the BEST garlic smell I have ever used. I like it better than the gulp garlic also. I will only use lunker sauce, until I need a trout flavor. Also no plug either for them, I just love the SAUCE.

my 2cents is this...

Scent is kind of like a confidence lure!
If you have confidence in it, then by all means use it.

I also belive that a fish will tend to hold on to a bait longer if it is scented.

The scent "may" serve as an attractant? Hoever I have not seen a true diffrence either way, the only exception may be in very stained or muddy water conditions, Then it may serve some purpose?

P.S Dr. Juice makes some pretty good stuff.

I pre fished my first tournament last year. I was getting bit like CRAZY on a jig. But only caught about half my bites. The next day I put some pro cure on. My first fish of the day swallowed my jig! After that it was on! Had to adjust for the pro cure and I boated about 95% of my fish.

Again that kind of proves my theroy that a fish will hold onto a scented lure longer,.. maybe even thinking that its real FOOOOD!!

I always use scent on my finesse lures. Not as often on the reaction baits.

I'm concerned that since my hudd is about 3 years old now, if it's accumulated some scents from my closet, car, mold? Would scents be able to cover up any odors that the bait has been exposed to?
