ABA held their Open event at El Capitan. The fishing was tough with all the fishing pressure the last few weeks hosting tournaments every weekend and the water dropping. There were only 10 limits submitted with a total of 18 anglers. Once everyone submitted their fish and all the fish were judged, Ron Kim captures a win with 84.75” just besting second by ¼". Kim used buzz bait early in the morning and after an hour had not caught a fish. Kim adjusted and started to throw a 3” Senko to catch his winning limit.

“I waisted my time throwing a buzz bait for the first hour in hopes to catch a big fish.” declared Kim, “I changed up to a 3” Senko, which was the same size as the bait fish in the area.”

“I used the Senko the rest of the day.” proclaimed Kim, “The fish were on the outside of the brush near deep water.”

“The area was in the middle of the lake and there was no one around me.” mentioned Kim, “I was fishing between 6 to 10-feet of water.”

“I tried deeper water but couldn’t get bit.” revealed Kim, “The fish were just about a few feet from the brush and closer to deep water.”

“I was rigging the Senko weightless Texas rigged with an offset hook.” communicated Kim, “I had to let the Senko slowly fall and let it sit.”

“I did catch a 15” fish the last few minutes of the day that helped me win this event.” expressed Kim.

Kim thanked his wife, family, and friends for all their support, but most of all Julian for all his help

Geoff Peterson was runner up with a total of 84.50” just missing first by ¼". Peterson used topwater at first but never caught a fish, he adjusted to a free rig and on his first cast, caught a fish.

“I started off with a topwater bait but never got a bite. mentioned Peterson, “I picked up my free rig and caught my first fish early in the morning. On my second cast, I caught my second fish on the free rig.”

“I moved back to a location where a boat and kayak was earlier in the day.” stated Peterson, “There was no one on that spot so I stopped there and culled up and then caught a 20.25” all on the free rig.”

“I culled up three times on that one spot.” confessed Peterson, “I moved back to my starting spot just before the end of the day but was unable to cull there.”

Peterson thanked Anglers Marine for all their support, and ABA for hosting great events.

Steve Buechner finished in third with 84.00” just one-half inch behind second place. Buechner used a rip bait early in the day to entice a nice fish. He made an adjustment so he moved out deeper fishing points with a drop shot.

“I caught a nice fish early on a rip bait.” admitted Buechner, “After that first nice fish, I only caught a few more none scorable fish.”

“I moved out deeper and started to fish an offshore point with a drop shot paired with a MMIII Robo worm to catch my limit.” disclosed Buechner, “I noticed that the lake had dropped about 5-feet, that is why I moved out to deeper water.”

“It was a slow bite and I had to work hard to get all my bites.” revealed Buechner, “I had to work that water depth from 10 to 15-feet of water to get my bites.”

“It was a grind to get the bites.” acknowledged Buechner, “I worked points with rock or big rock.”

“I had to leave an hour early to go to my son's graduation party and never thought that 84.00” would end up in third place.” admitted Buechner.

Buechner thanked Fast Lane Kayaks, Hobie, Heck Electric and Solar and ABA for hosting a great event. But most of all my wife and family for all their support.
