Rod for poppers?

Post by Micropterus salmoides »

What rod are you all using for poppers? Currently I'm using a Loomis CBR845, but I'm thinking of something with more power. Just curious to see what others' preferences are.

Okuma guide select GS-C-701M (7 foot medium) or the GS-C-701MH (7 foot medium heavy)

Both awesome rods for the buck!
Good luck

the CBR845 is a heavy rod for poppers, i throw my poppers on a CBR783 or CBR841. The CBR845 makes a good rod for a spook or sammy around 1/2 oz.

Adding a fourth vote for the the old CBR845. My fave stick for Chug Bugs and similar sized poppers/chuggers. For smaller poppers like Splash-Its I like the CBR843...

BPS crankin stick. 7 footer med light action. I also use an e21 6'6" that works really well. Its not a carrot stick and im not sure they even sell them. A medium light action works the best for me. At times i even use a spinning rod as well with 12 lb mono.

CB845 is an excellent rod. For me it has a tad too much power for the smaller Rico type baits. If you want a little more power try throwing 20 LB. Power Pro. It kind of goes against the grain of thought for topwaters but It's all I use. Many others do the same thing. You can cast it a mile and just tighten up on them for a solid hookset. It also gives you more control working the bait. Lots of spook and buzzbait fishermen swear by braid. I have not used mono on topwater for about 10 years, even at Mead. Just my 2 cents worth.

Ditto to gary i use 20 # power pro for small topwaters and 35-50 for spooks you can cast it a mile

for rods i throw a 6' 6" st croix glass rod for popers and 7' glass rod for spooks only cause i want a little forgiveness so i don't rip out the hooks. good luck

topwater rules !!
