Rod buckle replacement help

Post by griz01 »

I am going to replace the rod buckle that I currently have because the buckle part that you pull out broke. The mechanism was concealed and I want to keep it that way. Does anyone know how to put the concealer piece ( the one that you see on the outside of the gunwale) on? Please help.

Have you bought the replacement yet?

You unscrew the whole unit. Slide it out. Slide in new. Replace the two screws & you're good to go.

I have already removed the broken unit. Maybe I should've been more specific. I have the new unit. The small cover that is screwed into the deck side of gunwale, how does that fit over the strap? The strap feeds through that when installed. I don't want to mount it flush like it shows on the package, then the two sides won't match and theres nothing wrong with the other buckle or strap.

I thought you were talking about the concealed (inside the gunwale) mount.

Sorry, I can't seem to get my head around what you are asking. Might be the prescription cough syrup.

Did you maybe need to get the optional deck housing adapter?

There is a slit in the middle of the buckle where the loop of the strap is... You have to pull the loop all the way to one side of the buckle and feed the loop through this slit.... DO NOT LET GO OF THE LOOP ONCE IT'S OUT OF THE BUCKLE!!! The loop will feed into the spring loaded retractor and then you are screwed...
If the hole in your gunwale is big enough to fit the buckle through, put the retractor in, pull the buckle through, then remove the buckle holding onto the loop...
If the hole is not big enough, you have to remove the buckle, then place the retractor and loop behind the gunwale and feed it through the hole in the gunwale... (PITA!!!)
After feeding it through the hole, slide the keeper on with the beveled edge of the screw holes facing out, then put the buckle back on... Screw into place and you're done...
Hope this makes sense...
