caught in 1977 and was 190 pounds 8 feet 2 inches long. Imagine spooning up one of those toads! RR

That's a very cool catch ! I wonder what kind of tackle he was using ? As anything one would typically use in a freshwater lake, would be "ultra-light" for a 190 lb Sturgy !

Anyhow, Sturgies will do great in most freshwater lakes, plus, they almost never make babies in these places, which might lead to problems.

Personally, I'd like to see the F&G put more Sturgies in other Cali lakes.

I love those dino-fish ! :-)

Me and my partner were up there 2 years ago pre fishing for a tournament, I am not sure what arm we where in ( I am not from around there ) but it was around 7:30 in the morning and we where throwing rip baits on a bank. All of a sudden we look into the cove to see a huge splash and what looked to be the tail of a sturgeon. This is no fish tail, I have heard of sturgeon being in shasta, but to see it first hand was amazing.

If that was not a sturgeon rolling, then it was one hell of a catfish....

They are in Oroville too. I have seen one twice, once way up in the middle fork. I was with my daughter and was real happy to have someone else there to verify what we saw. It rolled several times and it was pretty darn big. I believe the Oroville record is somewhere around 90 pounds. Was caught by a guy fishing for catfish off the dam. Took him several hours to land it, into the night. They had TV crews up there and everything. He was using 15lb test and somehow avoided being spooled.

I beieve part of the mitigation for the dams require that they plant all the species in the lake that existed in the river before it was dammed.

This could be a fish tale, but a diver I know said that the divers who inspect the dam at 100ft or lower have quit going down there. There are supposedly catfish that could eat a person there~!

I know that in San Diego the divers who cut line off of the towers in some of the local lakes, are surpised by the size of the catfish. One time a diver went to move a log and nearly had a heart attack!

Don, I have heard that story also, the first time was as a youngster of about 10 or so..I have heard of the tale from Texas to Georgia and now California..I do not doubt whatsoever there are some huge catfish in some of the lakes in this great nation, but big enough to swallow a man, I doubt..

When I was a kid we were catching catfish so big that I used their bottom vent orofice to invent the Hula Hoop. Thats also how the word invent got started in the first place.

S'true! My daddy was noodlin back on the St John's

Post by NaCl »

River in Jacksonville Florida when he got ate by one a them giants. Took him three days to hike back up it's esophagus but then he was stuck inside its mouth. Fortunately, the catfish open up to eat a herd of manatees and daddy escaped. Daddy says its the giant catfish that are at the root of all the missing ships in the Bermuda Triangle!

I rememver one time out by where the moth ball fleet got put

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

My Daddy and I were fishin for stripers when a greatbig old sturgeon took my Daddys bait. He fought that fish for 3 days we upped the anchor and let him tow us around from as far down as the carquinez bridge up to the antioch nd then back again. We woulda been on TV except that the hadent invented it yet and didnt have any heliocopters either. Finally after three days the fish went back to the place where we hooked it and just hunkered down and wouldnt move. My daddy was as strong as a bull but he couldnt budge that fish. Some guy in another boat volunterred to dive down and take a look.
He was don quite a while before came back up, we was getting a little skeered for him. But he came back up finally and told us that there was an old sunken school bus body down there and the fish was inside.
My daddy asked him why he didnt go inside and drag the fish out? The man told us that he had tried but that when the fish saw him coming he rolled up all the windows and locked the door.
