I was just over at the storage working on my boat and noticed I have a cool hub leaking oil. I must have happened on the drive out. Its not cold temp related as the boat is in a constant 65 deg underground storage.
So how do I fix this thing? Is it something that can be done myself?
Thanks
Gary

there are o-rings and seals in the hub. get the parts and change them yourself. while ur at it do all the axle seals too. it easy fix. make sure you take all the seals and o-rings with you when you get parts. there are several different sizes sometimes for the same year.

Your boat dealer or Napa has the seals and parts you need, and yes you can do the work yourself. Bill K

Re: Ranger Cool hub
Yes, do it yourself. Take the wheel off. Set a drain pan underneath the hub. Drain oil. Pop off the front bearing cap. Discard the seal/o-ring. remove spindle nut. remove hub and replace hub seal. reinstall reverse procedure. refill hub with valvoline 50w racing oil. Fill slowly(to rid air bubbles)and to the top.

Gary,
I had my cool-hub 101 course this last fall myself. Let me share with you a few random thoughts /considerations for this process. As you get into a specific job for the first time there can be a lot of detail questions that come up. First, determine if it is the inside or outside seal as this may influence the level of work involved. It may be that the problem was there for longer than you can detect from the oil puddle. In other words, this problem may have started a while back and as a consequence there may be oil that has been distributed all over the brake assembly. If the leak is on a non-brake hub then things are going to be more simple. However, if not then the brake pads will need to be replaced and or at least cleaned with something like Brake Clean. Another thing to consider in this whole thing is WHY the seal has leaked. I had an experience where there was a small bead of a weld left on the underside of the spindle that caused premature seal wear and leakage. If you do take the entire hub off make sure to check for a clean spindle. In my case the boat trailer was only a few years old and I knew something else was the reason for the problem. It has been fixed thru use of some emery cloth. Having said all this, it is a fairly simple thing to do your self. Other questions or comments just PM me.
Good Luck!

Gary,
I sure hope you and the family are doing good.
My 2006 ranger trailer has cool hubs. The new cool hubs are sold as a single unit and have an easy fill cap. I just had one replaced. I would suggest going this route as each one starts to leak.
The old system for me was a nightmare. The new ones are really user friendly. hope this helps, Rich

Hey rich;
I have an 04 ranger with cool hubs and was wondering if the new ones will work the same. Was there anything you had to change as far as the hub goes?
Thanks for the info

Bump,
I actually had Cand C marine do it while in for warranty work. I would think it would be the same for yours it was a pretty simple replacement process. Give them a call and I am sure they will answer your questions.
A couple of years ago I was on my hands and knees with Chet trying to fix the old style and what a pain it was! If the O ring was not in place correctly it did not seal as well as trying to get the oil in.
