Questions about Lake Merced, San Francisco
Questions about Lake Merced, San Francisco
I've lived in San Francisco for over a decade, and I never gave a single thought to fishing Lake Merced in the City until I read an article in the SF Chronicle recently that said efforts were being made to restore the lake. I have a crazy idea of getting a float tube and trying my hand at fishing for bass with a fly rod. I saw some video of someone doing it at an Expo, and it looked like a hoot. Since I don't know what I'm doing, I thought it would be best to spend more time perfecting my technique (if you can call it that) than driving all over creation to find a good lake, thus the idea of fishing Merced. Plus, it would be kind of cool to have "home water" that I could fish on short notice. Anyone in this forum ever tried fishing Lake Merced for Bass? Ever tried a float tube? How about a fly rod? Which parts/structures/plant life etc. do you focus on when you fish? Don't need to know anyone's secret spot, just some general advice or impressions about my crazy idea.

There's actually decent bass fishing at Lake Merced and yes, a float tube will give you better access to spots that shore fishers can't get to. A few years ago, two float tubers came across a decomposing body in Merced!

Mr.Clean,
I would try it but bring a lot of patience. those bass don't chase nothing i throw BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF BIG BASS IN THERE> Try something dark, natural, and a fair size. The next time i go out there I will be tossing a big black and red brush hog on a glass and brass set-up!

I just recently moved back into the city and I have been to the lake a few times at night from shore with no luck, but last weekend out there I saw a guy putting a small boat in the back impound. Talked to him a bit and he said that he has not had much luck but he knows there are bass in there. I am planning a trip out there soon in my tube too
