question about registering an old aluminum boat
question about registering an old aluminum boat
My neighbor gave me an old aluminum boat for free
He doesnt have paper work on the boat (pink slip)
How would i go about registering this boat?
will a bill of sale work?

Re: question about registering an old aluminum boat
I am in AZ and just went through a mess on a 14' aluminum for my grandson. Texas boat with no title. G&F had to contact TX and found it had not been registered since 1990. It was in storage here in Page. I had a notarized bill of sale which they accepted and gave me a new title. There should be a hull ID number on the transom. Either way just ask them what you need to do. Good luck. Mine is almost like a new boat now.

In CA it's easy, just bring the bill of sale or document stating who gave it to you and fill out the new title form. Bring the boat with you, they'r going to check the vin# to verify and thats about it. I just did this on an old 12' aluminum last year, hadn't been registered in 15 years, it cost about $130 if I remember correctly.

If you are not using a motor (oars only) it doesnt even need to be registered.

Yes, if it is equipped with a TM or any other non human means of propulsion you need to get it registered.mark poulson wrote:What about a trolling motor?clearlakeoutdoors wrote:If you are not using a motor (oars only) it doesnt even need to be registered.

I had heard that you need CF only if the boat has a combustion engine.GregD wrote:Yes, if it is equipped with a TM or any other non human means of propulsion you need to get it registered.mark poulson wrote:What about a trolling motor?clearlakeoutdoors wrote:If you are not using a motor (oars only) it doesnt even need to be registered.

Re: question about registering an old aluminum boat
I'd file a certificate of lien against it. They contact the last known owner (if they even have an address which I doubt.) He, if he gets the notice, has 30 days to pay you your exorbitant storage fee or forget about it. After 30 days its yours without any back fees. It has to be on your property or say it is.
I had to do this to take possession of a Ford Ranchero just to haul it to the dump after no response from code enforcement for a year. They called 3 days after I paid 50 bucks to have it junked.

Nope... I and many other kickboaters who've put TMs on our kickboats have learned that the CA law is that you must register and get CF numbers if you are putting a TM on your craft. No matter what size. I didn't "hear" this. It's written in the rules and enforced, as are many of our boating laws, somewhat randomly on different lakes. I decided not to take the chance on getting a ticket and went the fully compliant registration route.jazzwannabe wrote:I had heard that you need CF only if the boat has a combustion engine.GregD wrote:Yes, if it is equipped with a TM or any other non human means of propulsion you need to get it registered.mark poulson wrote: What about a trolling motor?

Boy, my old 14ft johboat was only 25.00, just showed them the bill of sale, had not been registered for 15 yrs. That was it.WishinIwerFishin wrote:In CA it's easy, just bring the bill of sale or document stating who gave it to you and fill out the new title form. And yes you need to register and get CF numbers even with a TM, any motor, electric or fuel, Kalifornia wants $$ to put it on the water. Bill K
