Quantum spinning reels

Post by griz01 »

Anybody know where I can send one to be repaired? It back reels when it's in the locked position. Not so good when you're setting the hook.

I could fix it for you, Sounds like the little locking spring came loose. Easy fix. What kind of reel is it?

I have a bunch of Quantum spinning reels, and the same thing is starting to happen on several of them.
I took one apart, and the spring is fine. It's the anti-reverse bearing, what their service dept. calls the clutch, that's not working.
I learned from Quantum that you have to lube that bearing every so often.
I have never lubed that bearing, even though I've lubed the other bearings. It never occured to me to lube it.
Doh!
I'm going to try and soak the bearing in ReelX, and then relube it, to see if that helps. If not, I'll have to buy new clutch bearings for them, which I was told are still available.

I buy the Optis. Function every bit as good as the Catalysts at a 1/4 of the cost. Never had one go bad but if it did, I'd throw it and buy another. They are so cheap I take 2 extra along when I fish. I can't tell the difference when I use my Catalyst or the Opti.

Greg,
That's probably true, but I own enough Catalysts and Kinetics to make it worth fixing them.

I absolutely love em all. Great reels. I know what you mean, hard to throw away a $60-$109 reel.

I just did it, and it worked. Took ten minutes, tops.
Amazing what that ReelX can do.
I used a salsa cup, and sprayed enough to cover the bearing when I leaned it to the side. I rotated it several times, and used the sleeve collar to rotate the actual roller bearings, to get the ReelX into all the nooks and crannies.
The clear ReelX turned kind of black with all the crap that it cleaned out of the bearing.
Then I blew it clean/dry with an air hose, loaded the bearing back up with oil, and, Voila!, it works again.
Evidently there is dirt and worn metal that accumulates over time, and keeps the clutch from grabbing.

Can you notice a difference between your kinetics and catalysts?

I had the same problem on three of my energy PTI's. Anti reverse bearing for sure.

This was brought up a few months ago. My fix and it's still working, month's later, is to Glue, not lube. The bearing "cage" breaks lose from the housing that it's in. It's tough to separate them but once you do, you can glue them in place. This might also be temporary but the Krazy Glue is still holding after doing this back in January. They need to have their Bearing Manufacturer , sodder the two things together.
It might be lonely at the Top, but it's a bitch, at the Bottom !

No.
In truth, I very seldom use spinning stuff anymore, but I can't tell the difference between th Catalysts and the Kinetics.
