Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
Quantum also makes the Accurist, (which for those who can't afford an expensive reel) for $79 in BPS. I picked up my first one in 2005 at the Fred Hall in the City, and have had zero problems with any of them.
Show me the water and I will fish.
Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
I have not found them to be as good as the spinning reel (which is awesome) Had to send one back that had a dry bearing. Rumor was they had a load of them that were not lubed. Drag is not nearly as good as Shimano. Too bad because the price point is right and the spinning reel is incomparable. Just my experience.

Don't forget to check out the Revo SX. For $149.99 it is very hard to beat!

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
You might also try the Quantum Accurist AC500PT reel. At about $129 retail, it's reasonably priced and includes the same PT hard gearing as the Energy series. And I tend to disagree regarding the drag systems on the Quantum PT reels; I find them comparable to, if not better than, any of the other top manufacturer's reels. IMHO, this reel is a great value for the money.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
BPS has the KVD signature model w/flip switch for $79 (reg. 99) here:
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/store ... 00_100-1-1
A step up from the Accurist for the same $.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
Honestly guys... spend the extra $40 and get the Accurist PT500 or 501 model... much better warranty. Hardened gears, ceramic drag system and 5 High end Ball Bearings...
FYI = The Energy has 7 high end ball bearings and the Tour Edition has 11 high end ball bearings.
Now as for the drag not comparing to Shimano.. I have a little story for you... and its 100% true! I went (as a regional pro staffer) to Tulsa Oklahoma to the National Sales meeting of Quantum. There were a couple other guys from out here with me. Their test lab is amazing.. I watched them test the drag of several reels.. buy pulling against the drag with high speed for quite some time. They actually did 2 reels at the same time.. A Shimano Curado on one machine and the Quantum Accurist PT 500 on the other. They burned a locked up the drag system on 3 Curado's before the Quantum finally gave out. You see ceramic dissapates the heat from the friction of the drag... and metal doesn't. In fact when heated metal warps and therefore binds the drag system. Say whatever you want about the drag systems of the reels... and we all have our favorite reel companies as we do boat companies etc... but, simple laws of physics and the material composition of the drag says differently.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
good read Tom....I've been swapping out the drag washers on my Calcutta's with ceramic washers...I think there's Carbontex drag washers and ceramic bearings out there for the Curado's..ofcourse this means more money!TomLeogrande wrote:Their test lab is amazing.. As for the PT's I've got a PT 770 I've used for different applications and imo it shines in jig/worm fishin'...the bigger handle, lighter spool, and ergonomics are great..its very smooth! you can get them on fleabay all the time...in comparison to the Revo Sx it feels more sturdy and casts heavy flouro better.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
I was casting my Energy against a Shimano Chronarch, each of us with a 1/2 oz rattletrap, and my casts were going 30% farther than the Chronarch. I handed my rod to him, and he immediately started casting further, hmmm...
My dad uses the old Shimano Curados (green super free) and I also outcast him. Infact, he likes my reels so much that he steals them, claiming I have enough for both of us!
I love my Energys!

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
I purchased a Quantum E500 in 1995 and have fished it everytime I go out which is usually at least once a week in decent weather. It has performed flawlesslly. I will match it any day with my Shimano Curados, ( which I love as well). Reading Tom's response reminded me how long I have had that reel. Right now it is loaded with power pro on a frog rod.
I know when I bought it because as a tackle collector I always save the boxes for my reels. 12 years ain't bad.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
12 years is amazing! I wouldn't expect my reels to last that long - because I take pretty poor care of them with all the use they get and my lack of doing anything to them besides swap the line out. Who knows though - I am working on 3 years with some of my Quantum stuff and its still working perfectly!

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
I had a quantum energy casting and a energy spinning reel, I thought that they were the best then I was introduced to daiwa it out performs the energys by far and all the shimanos I have ever used (including the calais). Daiwa Zillion baby best reel ever.

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
thanks for all the thoughts on the reels.
Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
I have played with the Zillion and the Steez and they are good reels no doubt about that. Better than the Quantums? not sure... but, good reels none-the-less!

Re: quantum energy pt baitcast reels
The E600 is the best reel Quantum ever made. Poor paint job, great reel.
If they broought them back with clear plastic sides like the Diawa Itos, they'd have a winner, for sure.
I know Quantum went all metal for performance and durability, but I've found that all metal reels get HOT on the deck in the summer time.
I actually had to dip one in the lake Saturday so I could hold it. Just like the old all metal Skilsaws that we used to hide under a piece of 1X or plywood when we put them down to keep them cool enough to handle.
For the price, you can't beat the KVD reels from BPS, as was mentioned farther up this thread.
If only they'd make a light bait reel. I use an E600 with 8lb for wacky senkos and hudbugs, but I have bought Pflueger Summits ($159 at Tacklewarehouse) for 1/8oz. shaky worms, small jerkbaits, and drop shotting. I don't think there's a better baitcasting reel for light stuff anywhere near that price.

I'm buying the KVD from BPS just for flippin'. I'm thinking it'll be good for that....
Who else makes a LH baitcaster with a flippin switch anyway?.....

I have two left handed KVDs just for pitching and flipping. Great reels.
I have two right hand set ups with 50lb braid for chatterbaits, blades, and small swim baits. Again, great reels.
