Quagga Inspections when it rains?

What's going to happen? I'm sure this has been addressed, but I can't find anything about it.

I don't know about near you but I have heard that if it rains no boating will be allowed. They will probably just close the lake to boats, unless there is a banding program and you already have one.

Every inspection I have had at clear lake, they never even looked at my boat. Could have got a sticker for my dog if I wanted.

Yea, the clearlake process isn't intense. The Santa Clara County process is much more in depth, and that's why I'm wondering what will happen when it starts raining!

Santa Clara, unlike Clear Lake actually inspects the boats and there is no such thing as a sticker.

I have heard that Santa Clara Lakes will either close to boating when it rains or only let boats that are already banded in. I would call them to make sure. I also just heard that of the remaining Santa Clara county lakes will be closing for the winter. Not sure which two though.

I asked a ranger at Anderson, and he told me that you will have to be banded already to put your boat in the lake that day. They won't do inspections if it is raining.

Steve,

Mememorial weekend it rained (can yo believe it)

I was at Pardee and they do a very intense inspection there. when I arrived it was not raining as we were leaving it was pouring. I went over and asked the inspector's how it was going to work? now that it was raining.

I was told they would use common sense aka does the live well have an odor, look at the compartments for old standing water, was the drain plug out etc. etc.

I thanked him for explaining made sense to me, you can discern clean from not even though it is raining.

They simply cannot inspect the boat properly if everything is wet. How do you suggest they do it? Just let everyone in when it rains? How would they know what is rain water and what is water from another lake?

I ran into this same problem at Pardee. It rained the night before I went. My boat was a little wet when I got to the lake. When they checked my livewells there was some water arond the brim. They would not send me out. This winter I hope they come up with some guide lines for so we know what to do when it rains.

I just got off the phone with Santa Clara County Parks & Rec. and they told me two things of interest.

1) If you go to a lake and are unbanded and it's raining, you will be denied, they won't perform the inspection because everything will obviously already be wet.

2) With regards to potentially shutting the lakes down in the winter, this is a possibility as they don't currently have funding to continue the inspection process through December 31st. They're in negotiations right now in efforts to come to some sort of budgetary solution, but as of now have no update and admit there is a chance of Coyote, Anderson, Calero etc being shut down after December 31st if a resolutions isn't met.

If the stupid thing can be transported in a bit of moisture or a drop of water why not just close all the lakes to boating?
That is what they want to do. Seems that is what alot of people here want to see as well.

or allow only boats that do not leave the lakes property to launch.

that way we have private lakes. kinda like casitis is now.

find a way to kill the mussels or atleast control them.
Do not take away my boating rights with your knee jerk panic reactions.

the mussel WILL be in ALL of our waters according to the information we have. Boats or NO boats.

Just for once lets not penilize the fishermen.

You're preaching to the choir, brother... gotta take it up with the right authorities, while you still can. As you point out, Casitas, and to a close extent Cachuma, are nearly 'privatized' already. Fight for your rights, in an organized and methodical manner, without emotional outbursts or derrogatory statements.

Take it from your Southern brothers who have all lived this, and are suffering the consequences. I for one haven't been to Casitas since HBC I, which was the last time I was able to take my motorhome and boat to the lake. It was closed off shortly thereafter, and once re-opened it was with restrictions that I can't possibly comply with. We went there at least 5 times a year over the last several, some long weekends and some for a week or more (the last two Christmas', and last New Years as well). It is one of the drivers that has compelled me to relocate at this time.

Very sore, open, festering wound... don't let it happen to you without a fight!

I have had this conversation with several Lake Rangers. Most do not have an answer that made me happy. Like DL said it will depend on the inspector and whether he has the ability to use common sense. Not that the inspector is without common sense but whether the lead ranger or the lake will allow it or the rules will be strictly followed.

Another problem is the attitude of the inspector. Recently we were trying to get boats through inspection for a tournament at Cachuma. The first day we tried the inspection was minimal but was a thorough and acceptable inspection. The next day was a different inspector and totally different procedure. To say the least I have had a less invasive inspection when I went for a colonoscopy.

I do plan on fishing some tournaments in Central and Northern California next season and this is why my boat is always ready for a Lake Casitas type of inspection no matter where I go. You never know what kind of inspection you are going to get and I know I'm clean and dry and should be able to pass any ones inspection with the exception of zip code restriction.

It will be a problem with some lakes this next season for tournaments. This is one where we will have to wait and see.

Put a cover on your boat so u know how much water will be let in when you get there maybe perhaps??

I don't like traveling with a cover on but I do when it rains. It will minimize the wetness in the boat. Last year at Casitas a bunch of us traveled to the lake and the marine layer was pretty thick. Everything was wet but we all put covers on and pass Casitas inspection which at the time was intense. So yes a cover absolutely helps.
