Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
Which one, and why ?
What is the difference [besides price]?
None around here to feel or see myself.
Clue a guy in.
Honestly, I am not trying to start a pissing match between staffers or "loyalists", but instead trying to learn.
Thanks for keeping this civil and informative, please.

I have mostly Powell's, and the 735 to me feels like a broom, with the sensitivity of a broom.. so maybe the Dobyns would be nicer

Which series of Dobyn's rods are you comparing. What are you going to do with that rod? For blades, may be OK ... But ...Wild Bill wrote:Which one, and why ?

To be fair, you have to compare the Powell with the new Savvy series ... that said, most Powells are very tip heavy. I have their 765 flipping stick and to counterbalance the rod, I had to put over 2.5ozs at the butt end to make the rod balance. However, if you're looking a tthe 735 (Powells; which I've never fished), the Dobyn's Gen2 Champion 735C is pretty sweet. It balances quite well and seem to be pretty sensitive. But that said, it's in the same ballpark as the Loomis IMX in terms of PRICE. Sensitivity wise, I'd still would go with the IMX. So ... there you have it.

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
I own both.
The Powell 735C is a very very stout rod. It's a no nonsense frog/slop/punching rod. I have not tested its sensitivity since I've only used it for frog fishing. I plan to double use it in the SF bay to troll for halibut and jig scampies for rock cod off our coast. A good rod for the money if you fish mats. Heavy stick with Fuji components.
The Dobyns 735C isn't as stout and I find it to cast much better. It's a good frog rod for sparse cover and open water. If you want a Dobyns rods for mats, I'd go one higher and get the 736. The 735C is my favorite (so far) of all of the Dobyns line up. It's very balanced and I believe it to be the most versitle of the rods. I own multiple 735C rods because I like it that much. Put it this way, I won't be using my Dobyns rods in the ocean!!

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ?? [for frogging]
Sorry, Guys...
In my original post in this thread , I should have told you I wanted to use this rod for hollow-bodied Snagproof frogs in slop, using braided line on it.
Thanks for all the input so far.
Cars ?? USA #1, baby!! .I drive a CHEVY Suburban !
I cannot pull my Ranger Bassboat with a Camry or a Prius.
BUT If I had a Vette, I bet I could swap it with a buddy to use his truck for a day to pull my boat with while he cruised around that day in my Vette.{LOL}
Not sure that would fly if I drove a Prius or Camry...{LOL}

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ?? [for frogging]
I have fished the 735 Powell for three years now, to me it is a great pitchin rod, flip too I usually punch and flip with the 766... the rod (735) is good for mondo froggi'n but for all around covering water it's a bit heavy (stout) I use a 705 for froggin the distance..the 735 would be a good slop, cheese rod no doubt..
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

I compared the Powell 735C to the Dobyns 735C on several occasions and had someone hold the tips while I loaded the rods and I definitely noticed that the Powell had more power. I don't know if it is more or less powerful than the Dobyns 736C, but I would think that it is more comparable to it than the Dobyns 735C.

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
Rod "stiffness" is sometimes misinterpreted as power. I would rather have an extra fast tip with a bit of action for froggin, sort of "slingshots" fish back towards you when they load against it.

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
I owned a Powell 735 and had it matched up with a Revo STX and it felt like the rod was going to fall out of my hands because it was so tip heavy. It made working frogs very difficult, but the rod is like what everyone else says...a broom!
Now I have a 2nd generation Dobyns Champion 736 and it is balanced right at the front of the reel seat with a Daiwa Zillion. It has more tip to it than the Powell, which makes casting a little better. I haven't had a chance to fish it yet, but I do believe it has the same amount of power as the Powell 735.
The Dobyns is just completely better than the Powell. The better balance will make it easier to work a frog and fish with all day. I'm looking forward to the summer to hopefully catch some fish on it

Re: Powell 735 VS Dobyn's 735 ??
The Powell is an ex-fast action rod and the Dobyns is fast. The Dobyns weighs less and uses SIC insert guides which are better for braid. Braid can carry silt and fine particles of sand which are abrasive. Silicon carbide is harder and more wear resistant then aluminum oxide which is used in the Fuji Alconite guides. The fuji guides do have a nicer frame then the Kigan guides, but thats a minor factor. Both are very versatile rods
My personal preference after owning both is the Dobyns. The Dobyns is lighter and has a better action.

The 735 Powell is a pitchin' stick good for swim baits too, also heavy froggin', it's not a broom stick that would be a pool cue with anchor line...
