Central Valley Kayak Fishing (CVKF) held their first event of 2025 at Lake Kaweah. The fishing was tough at best with the recent rains filling the lake 30 feet within one week. 38 fisherpersons had signed up with only 20 fish submitted during the tournament day. Two anglers managed to catch 3 fish each placing first and second place and two anglers had two fish each with one placing third. The weather was perfect with sun and very little wind, but the event followed one of California’s big storms changing where the fish were located the week before, with post storm conditions and the lake rising several feet made a tough lake even tougher to catch fish.

First place went to Chushizonh Lord with 47.25”. He caught all his fish on a Neko rigged Senko in about 15-feet of water near rocks.

“I threw the Neko Rigged Senko all day long. During practice, I had found fishing extremely tough, so I went back to the Neko Rigged Senko, my go to bait for bites.” said Lord.

“I brought two rods to the event, so I made sure I threw the Neko Rigged Senko the entire day.” stated Lord, “I didn’t want to waste time using lures that I had not caught fish on.”

“I kept it simple and stuck with the Neko Rig and only had three bites.” said Lord, “I was lucky to get on the bank that held fish early in the morning and then stayed in that area all day.”

“This is my second tournament that I had fished and was happy to had won this event.”

Lord thanked all the tackle shops Cope’s Tackle, 559 Fresno Bait and Tackle, Rod and Gun, my friends that got me into kayak fishing and most of all Donaven Vanerpart for all his hard work making these events a success.

San Saechao placed in second with 38.75” with three fish. Saechao had found practice tough so he knew he had to fish slow to get his bites. He stated that the lake had rose over 30-feet within a week.

“I fished a rocky area that I had fished since I was 3 years old with my dad.” expressed Saechao, “I threw a Ned rig and dead sticked the bait to get my bites.”

“After noticing that the lake had risen over 30 feet in a week, I felt that I needed to fish a bank that had rock and deep water nearby.” disclosed Saechao, “I was using 30-pound braid to 6-pound Seaguar InvizX Floro line.”

“I felt that the 6-pound test would get more bites compared to heavier line.” said Saechao, “I would slowly drag the bait and then would let it sit still, dead sticking the bait, once I would start to move the bait again, it would have some weight to it and it would be a fish.”

“I never felt any bites just weight on the lure.” communicated Saechao, “It was either a fish or a snag so I set on everything that felt heavy.”

“I was catching the fish in about 15 to 25 feet of water to get my bites.” said Saechao.

Saechao thanked his wife for all her support, Donaven Vanerpart for all his hard work to run these events.

“Eric Maciel placed in third with 31.75”. Maciel considers Lake Kaweah his home lake and had never had to deal with rising water condition as what all the anglers dealt with during this event.

“I consider Lake Kaweah my home lake, I fish this lake all the time and had never had to deal with the lake rising over 30 feet in a week.” stated Maciel, “I used two lures to catch my fish.”

“I was throwing a small jig in about 40-feet of water and an umbrella rig suspended over the top of 60-feet of water.” said Maciel, “I did catch a few small fish on the umbrella rig.”

“I was using a G-money 3/8-ounces jig and a Picasso umbrella rig was the two lures that I caught fish on during the event.” expressed Maciel, “I was fishing the main lake area near the dam for the fish I had caught.”

Maciel thanked his family for all their support, also, CVKF family for hosting these events. Maciel also thanked Rod Broker.
